Kerala Chief Minister Rejects SDPI Allegations as Baseless
Thiruvananthapuram: In a firm rebuttal, Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan has categorically dismissed claims made by the Social Democratic Party of India (SDPI) regarding the Communist Party of India (Marxist) seeking its support in elections, particularly in the Nemom constituency. Speaking to the media on Tuesday, Vijayan labeled these assertions as completely unfounded and contrary to established facts.
Clarifying the 2021 Nemom Election Scenario
The Chief Minister provided context to the 2021 assembly elections in Nemom, where the Left Democratic Front (LDF) candidate secured victory against the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). "Several organizations and individuals likely voted for the LDF candidate to defeat the BJP, but such organic developments cannot be misconstrued as formal political support," Vijayan explained.
He emphasized that the political landscape in Nemom was distinct during that period. "We contested the election with the explicit objective of eliminating the BJP's presence there. Many voters recognized the LDF as the most viable force to achieve this, but this was not the result of any covert agreement," the CM stated.
Reaffirming Secular Principles
Vijayan took the opportunity to reiterate the LDF's unwavering commitment to secularism. "The LDF maintains no association with religious fundamentalists from any community. We uphold a principled and pure secular stand, which is non-negotiable," he declared, distancing the front from any perceived alliances with groups like the SDPI.
Criticism of Opposition Alliances
Turning his attention to the opposition, the Chief Minister accused the United Democratic Front (UDF) of hypocrisy. "The UDF is attempting to deceive the public by publicly rejecting SDPI support while simultaneously aligning with organizations such as the Jamaat-e-Islami. Do they believe people have forgotten their open celebrations following the UDF's victory in the Palakkad by-election?" Vijayan questioned, highlighting what he termed as double standards.
Addressing Media Interactions and Development Agenda
Vijayan also addressed recent media interactions, including a contentious press meet in Kollam on Monday. He alleged that certain journalists deliberately created disruptions. "My usual practice is to speak for 30 to 40 minutes before taking questions, treating all journalists equally. The commotion that ensued was a manipulated attempt to distort proceedings, a new experience that underscores how narratives can be twisted," he remarked.
On the policy front, the Chief Minister extensively detailed the LDF government's developmental milestones:
- Vizhinjam Port Development: The ambitious Vizhinjam port project and its associated infrastructure are poised to transform Thiruvananthapuram's economic landscape. Phase IV is scheduled for completion in 2028, with the state government having already accrued Rs 125 crore in profits from the initiative.
- Employment Generation: Over the past decade, the LDF administration has created approximately 70,000 job opportunities across Kerala, fostering economic growth and stability.
- Long-term Vision: These projects are designed to lay a robust foundation for sustained, long-term development, with the government seeking a renewed public mandate to ensure continuity and further progress.
When persistently questioned about whether the LDF would accept SDPI votes in future elections, Vijayan remained unequivocal: "I have clearly stated my position. It may not align with what some wish to hear, but I cannot provide answers tailored to specific preferences." His statements collectively reinforced a message of secular integrity and developmental focus as core tenets of the LDF's political agenda.
