Kerala LDF Government Reverses Course, Supports Sabarimala Traditions in Supreme Court
In a significant policy shift, the Left Democratic Front (LDF) government in Kerala decided on Friday to back a Supreme Court affidavit that seeks to preserve the customs and traditions of the Sabarimala temple. This move aligns the state government with the position of the Travancore Devaswom Board and marks a reconsideration of its earlier stance supporting the entry of women of all ages to the shrine.
CPM State Secretariat Drives the Change in Position
The shift in the state government's stand came after the Communist Party of India (Marxist) state secretariat expressed its support for upholding traditions. CPM state secretary M V Govindan stated, "The CPM state secretariat decided that, as required, the Kerala government may give an appropriate response in the Supreme Court after examining its legal and constitutional aspects."
Govindan emphasized that the party has always been respectful of the sentiments of the faithful and advocated for a decision on Sabarimala to be taken after consulting experts in the field. He clarified, "We have to reply to seven questions, and none of them ask whether women should be allowed entry into Sabarimala or not. It is not just about Sabarimala; it is a constitutional issue before the apex court that concerns all religions."

This reversal is notable because the CPM had previously supported the 2018 Supreme Court verdict that allowed the entry of women of menstruating age into the temple. With review petitions now under consideration, the apex court has asked the aggrieved parties, including the state government, to clarify their stand by March 14.
