Gurgaon to Conduct Study on Waste Burning Hotspots for Pollution Control

In a significant move to combat air pollution, the Municipal Corporation of Gurgaon (MCG) is set to launch a comprehensive study to identify waste-burning hotspots across the city. This initiative is part of a broader plan to implement a 'zero open waste burning' model, targeting a major source of environmental degradation in the urban area.

Collaboration with WRI India for Technical Support

The project will be executed in partnership with the research organization WRI India, which will provide essential technical expertise. The collaboration aims to address two critical environmental issues in Gurgaon: open waste burning and improper management of construction and demolition (C&D) waste. Officials emphasize that this joint effort is crucial for developing sustainable solutions to enhance air quality and waste handling practices.

Meeting Details and Strategic Discussions

A key meeting was held on Friday under the leadership of MCG Commissioner Pradeep Dahiya. Attendees included Joint Commissioner Ravinder Yadav, along with WRI India representatives such as Programme Director Kumar Kumaraswamy and Senior Programme Manager Bhavya Sharma. During the session, officials deliberated on the proposed study, which will map areas with frequent waste-burning incidents and analyze the underlying causes to design effective interventions.

Piloting the Zero Open Waste Burning Model

As part of the initiative, MCG and WRI India will pilot the 'zero open waste burning' model in selected residential communities. This approach involves identifying and training 'community champions' within residents' welfare associations (RWAs) to monitor waste disposal practices and support grassroots campaigns. Commissioner Dahiya stated, "The objective of this joint effort is to work towards clean air, better waste management, and sustainable environmental solutions in the city, so that it can be made cleaner, healthier, and pollution-free."

Awareness and Capacity-Building Programs

Based on the study's findings, MCG plans to roll out extensive awareness and capacity-building programs targeting municipal staff, RWAs, schools, and colleges. These initiatives are designed to encourage behavioral change and actively discourage the practice of waste burning. Regular impact assessments will be conducted to measure the reduction in waste-burning incidents and related emissions, ensuring the project's effectiveness over time.

Focus on Construction and Demolition Waste Management

The collaboration will also prioritize improving the management of C&D waste, another significant contributor to dust pollution in Gurgaon. Officials plan to identify locations where this waste is illegally dumped and conduct drives to clear accumulated debris. Additionally, MCG aims to develop a comprehensive C&D waste management system, which includes:

  • Establishing decentralised collection points
  • Enhancing transport arrangements
  • Strengthening processing facilities
  • Promoting the use of recycled C&D materials in construction activities

This holistic approach seeks to tackle pollution from multiple angles, fostering a cleaner and more sustainable urban environment for Gurgaon's residents.
