Kerala Transport Minister K B Ganesh Kumar Averts Resignation Crisis After Apology to Wife
In a significant political development in Thiruvananthapuram, Transport Minister K B Ganesh Kumar has successfully averted a possible resignation following serious infidelity and assault charges raised by his wife, Bindu Menon. The controversy, which threatened to destabilize the ruling Left Democratic Front (LDF) government, was resolved after Kumar offered a formal apology to his wife and provided a detailed explanation to Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan.
Pressure Mounts as Assembly Elections Approach
Speculation had been rife that Kumar might be forced to step down from his ministerial position, with reports indicating that both the Chief Minister and the Communist Party of India (Marxist) leadership were deeply unhappy about the controversy. With crucial assembly elections looming on the horizon, the ruling LDF coalition was particularly keen to avoid any political crisis, especially one involving allegations concerning a woman that could damage their public image.
Sources within the government revealed that a clear message was conveyed to the minister: resolve the issue before the scheduled cabinet meeting on Tuesday morning, or face the possibility of being asked to stay away from the important gathering. Under mounting pressure from both party leadership and public scrutiny, Kumar reportedly first contacted relatives of Bindu Menon before speaking directly to his wife, offering a sincere apology for the developments that had unfolded.
Minister Attends Cabinet Meeting After Resolution
The minister did attend the crucial cabinet meeting as planned, and later engaged in a closed-door discussion with Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan. During this private conversation, Kumar reportedly informed Vijayan that the matter was essentially a family issue that had now been resolved between him and his wife. This explanation appeared to satisfy the Chief Minister, at least temporarily, allowing the government to focus on its regular administrative functions.
Bindu Menon later indicated her desire to bring the controversy to an end. In an interview with a television news channel, she confirmed that Kumar had contacted her sister on Monday and spoke to her directly on Tuesday morning. Menon stated clearly that Kumar had apologized for his actions and emphasized that she had no remaining complaints against her husband. She further declared that she would not leave him and expressed no interest in pursuing any formal complaints through legal channels.
Political Fallout and Opposition Reactions
Meanwhile, the political fallout continued with Youth Congress working president Binu Chulliyil filing a formal complaint with the state police chief against Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan's daughter, Veena Vijayan, and former Director General of Police R Sreelekha. This complaint followed Menon's earlier claim that she had discussed the personal matter with both Veena and Sreelekha before it became public.
Chulliyil alleged that both women were complicit in the incident and demanded that cases be registered against them for allegedly attempting to cover up the matter. Bindu Menon's decision to withdraw her complaints came as a substantial relief for the LDF government, with CPM leader and Speaker A N Shamseer declaring the episode a "closed chapter" that should not be pursued further.
Congress Intensifies Demand for Resignation
The opposition Congress party, however, stepped up its demands for the minister's immediate resignation, arguing that such serious allegations cannot be settled so easily through private apologies. Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee president Sunny Joseph asserted that this was not merely a simple family matter that could be quietly resolved behind closed doors.
"If the minister does not resign voluntarily, then the Chief Minister should demonstrate the political will and energy to remove him from the cabinet," Joseph declared during a press conference in Delhi. Similar views were expressed by opposition leader V D Satheesan, along with senior Congress leaders Ramesh Chennithala and K Muraleedharan, as well as party MP Jebi Mather. Adding to the pressure, SNDP Yogam general secretary Vellappally Natesan also joined the chorus demanding Kumar's resignation.
Protests Continue Despite Resolution
Protest marches were organized in Pathanamthitta by the United Democratic Front (UDF), Kerala Students Union (KSU), Youth Congress, and Mahila Congress against Minister Kumar. Despite these demonstrations and mounting opposition pressure, Kumar remained defiant, stating that he had no intention of resigning with only a few days remaining in the current government's term. The minister's position appears secure for now, but the controversy has undoubtedly left political scars that may influence the upcoming electoral battle in Kerala.
