Kerala Chief Minister V D Satheesan announced on Wednesday that the state government will provide free travel for women on 'ordinary' buses operated by the Kerala State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) starting June 15. The decision aims to enhance women's mobility and support their economic participation.
Scheme Details
The free ride scheme will initially cover only ordinary bus services, which are the most basic and affordable category of KSRTC buses. Women passengers will not be required to purchase tickets or show any special identification to avail of the benefit. The government expects this move to benefit thousands of women daily commuters, particularly those from lower-income groups.
Potential Expansion
Chief Minister Satheesan stated that after reviewing the response to the scheme, the government would consider extending the free service to other types of bus services, such as fast passenger, superfast, and AC buses. He emphasized that the initiative is part of the government's broader efforts to promote gender equality and reduce financial burdens on women.
The announcement comes ahead of the state's budget session, with the government allocating necessary funds to compensate KSRTC for the revenue loss. Transport department officials have been directed to ensure smooth implementation, including adequate signage and awareness campaigns at bus stands and on buses.
Women's rights groups have welcomed the move, calling it a progressive step towards inclusive public transport. However, some opposition leaders have raised concerns about the financial viability of the scheme and its impact on KSRTC's already strained finances. The government has assured that the scheme will be monitored closely and adjusted if needed.
