KIADB Land Acquisition Meeting in Mandya Draws Mixed Reactions

A high-stakes consultative meeting on proposed industrial area development brought farmers and officials face to face at the Zilla Panchayat Auditorium in Mandya, under the chairmanship of Deputy Commissioner Kumara on Thursday.

Meeting Addresses Land Acquisition Process

The meeting addressed the land acquisition process initiated by the Karnataka Industrial Areas Development Board (KIADB), focusing on villages identified for upcoming industrial zones. Farmers from Gejjalagere and Kuduregundi in Maddur taluk, along with Nodekoppalu in Mandya taluk, participated, voicing concerns and sharing their perspectives on the proposed acquisition. The initiative has triggered mixed reactions, reflecting both apprehension and cautious negotiation among landholders.

Government's Stance and Farmers' Rights

About the status of the project, Kumara said the government has already issued a preliminary gazette notification. He reiterated that farmers have the legal right to file objections and urged them to formally submit their grievances. On compensation, he assured that any demand for enhanced rates can be officially petitioned and will be forwarded to the state government for consideration. He emphasised that the process is still in its early stage and that further legal steps will be taken only after carefully reviewing farmers' feedback.

They highlighted the availability of robust irrigation facilities and the high productivity of the land, arguing that its acquisition would severely impact their economic stability.

Conditional Willingness from Some

At the same time, a section of farmers indicated a willingness to consider the proposal, provided the government offers compensation significantly higher than prevailing market rates.
