Kodagu Human-Animal Conflict: MLA Warns of Vigilante Action

Kodagu Grapples with Escalating Human-Animal Conflict Crisis

Madikeri: The picturesque district of Kodagu is facing a severe and escalating crisis of human-animal conflict, with local leaders warning that the situation could spiral out of control if immediate and permanent solutions are not implemented. AS Ponnanna, the chief minister's legal adviser and Virajpet MLA, delivered a stark warning in the Karnataka Legislative Assembly on Thursday, stating that frustrated residents might be forced to take the law into their own hands.

A String of Tragic Fatalities

The Congress MLA highlighted a series of recent tragedies that have plunged the district into fear and mourning. "Three people died within 10 days," Ponnanna stated, detailing the incidents. Earlier on Thursday, a grower was killed in a wild elephant attack in a village near Siddapur. This follows the death of a woman near Kushalnagar just two weeks prior. In a separate heartbreaking incident, a 19-year-old girl was attacked and killed by an elephant in Bettathur village near Madikeri.

District Gripped by Fear and Paralysis

Ponnanna painted a grim picture of daily life in Kodagu, where the threat from wildlife has become overwhelming. "An alarming situation has arisen in Kodagu. Fear has gripped the district because of elephants, leopards, and tigers. Life feels impossible," he told the assembly. The MLA further revealed that the pervasive fear has severely impacted agricultural activities, with many farmers abandoning their fields. "Farmers have even stopped cultivating paddy," he added, underscoring the economic toll of the conflict.

Urgent Plea for Government Intervention

In a direct appeal to the state leadership, Ponnanna urged Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Forest Minister Eshwar Khandre to take decisive action. "Take decisions and come to our rescue," he implored. The MLA issued a sobering caveat, suggesting that if the government fails to act, public frustration could boil over. "Otherwise, even if people take the law into their own hands, it cannot be criticised," he warned, highlighting the potential for vigilante justice in the absence of official solutions.

Demand for Allocation of Budgetary Funds

Ponnanna also pointed to the state budget, noting that Rs 1,500 crore has been allocated specifically for preventing human-animal conflict. He made a strong case for Kodagu to receive a significant portion of these funds, given the acute nature of the crisis in the district. The MLA's statements underscore a critical need for:

  • Immediate deployment of effective conflict mitigation measures.
  • Adequate financial resources directed to Kodagu for fencing, early warning systems, and habitat management.
  • A long-term, sustainable strategy to ensure coexistence between humans and wildlife.

The situation in Kodagu represents a pressing challenge for the Karnataka government, balancing conservation efforts with the safety and livelihoods of its citizens. The assembly session has brought this critical issue to the forefront, demanding urgent attention and action.
