A routine commute turned into a nightmare for a customs officer in Kolkata when a minor disagreement with an auto-rickshaw driver spiraled into a dangerous mob attack, sending shockwaves through the city's Kasba area.
The Incident Unfolds Near Ruby Hospital
The confrontation began on Saturday near the busy Ruby General Hospital crossing when customs officer Tamal Basu got into an argument with an auto-rickshaw driver over right of way. What started as a verbal spat quickly escalated beyond control.
"The auto-rickshaw driver allegedly called for backup, and within minutes, a group of men arrived at the scene and launched a brutal attack on the customs officer," revealed a police official familiar with the investigation.
Violence Erupts in Broad Daylight
Eyewitnesses described a chaotic scene as the mob surrounded the officer, assaulting him physically while creating panic in the densely populated area. The attack was so severe that local shopkeepers and pedestrians had to intervene to rescue the beleaguered officer from further harm.
"The situation became extremely volatile within moments. The officer was severely outnumbered and faced significant physical assault before help arrived," an eyewitness recounted.
Police Response and Arrest
Kasba Police Station responded promptly to emergency calls, arriving at the scene to control the situation. Based on the customs officer's complaint and preliminary investigations, authorities have arrested one individual identified as Mohammed Javed in connection with the mob attack.
"We have registered a case and taken one person into custody. The investigation is ongoing to identify and apprehend other participants in the attack," confirmed a police spokesperson.
Broader Implications for Public Safety
This incident raises serious questions about public safety and the ease with which minor disputes can escalate into violent confrontations in urban areas. The attack on a government official has particularly alarmed citizens and authorities alike.
Local residents have expressed concern about the growing tendency toward mob justice and the need for better law enforcement presence in busy commercial and residential zones.
As the investigation continues, Kolkata Police are examining CCTV footage from the area and questioning additional suspects. The case has drawn attention from senior officials who have emphasized zero tolerance for such public violence.
