Kolkata: Indradeb Bhattacharya (51), a joint secretary-rank official and nodal officer of the food and supplies department, succumbed to his injuries on Wednesday morning after a fall from the fourth-floor stairwell balcony of Khadya Bhavan on Monday. He was undergoing treatment at the state-run IPGMER-SSKM Hospital.
Details of the Incident
The incident occurred shortly after office hours began on Monday at the state government headquarters of the food and supplies department on Free School Street. Employees and visitors were taken aback when they heard a loud thud. Many rushed to investigate and found Bhattacharya fallen into a heap of redundant furniture stacked on the ground floor.
While it remains unclear why he went towards the sixth floor, CCTV footage reportedly showed him climbing to that floor before the fall.
Medical Response and Injuries
According to a hospital source, "He had multiple injuries, which were of a severe nature. He was rushed to our Trauma Care Centre in a critical and unconscious condition and was put on ventilation immediately. Despite all efforts, he died."
Doctors reported that the Bhawanipore resident sustained injuries all over his body, including the head, chest, rib fractures, limbs with multiple fractures, and internal bleeding in addition to external injuries.
Bhattacharya was a joint secretary-rank official and nodal officer of the department. The circumstances leading to the fall are under investigation, and authorities are reviewing the CCTV footage to ascertain the sequence of events.
This tragic incident has sent shockwaves through the department, and colleagues expressed grief over the untimely demise of the dedicated officer.
