Kolkata Municipal Corporation Activates Monsoon Preparedness Amid Election Season
The Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) has placed its executive engineers at drainage pumping stations on high alert following scattered rainfall across the city. This proactive move comes as the civic administration seeks to initiate monsoon preparedness well in advance, while simultaneously managing the ongoing election season's logistical demands.
Strategic Measures to Combat Waterlogging
According to a senior official from the KMC drainage department, the directive aims to prevent waterlogging during heavy showers until the election results are declared. Subsequently, these measures will continue to safeguard against area inundation throughout the monsoon period. The official emphasized that all heavy-duty pumps at major drainage pumping stations must be fully operational, with additional deployment planned to effectively man lock gates along the Hooghly River in case of severe downpours.
Enhanced Infrastructure and Community Relief Efforts
In a comprehensive approach, the civic body's drainage wing will engage special sewer-cleaning teams in waterlogging-prone areas of the city. This initiative targets clogged sewer lines to provide residents relief from prolonged inundation. Furthermore, the KMC is likely to hire portable pumps for low-lying and non-sewer zones to efficiently pump out storm water, ensuring broader coverage and resilience.
The integration of these strategies underscores KMC's commitment to urban management during critical periods, balancing election preparedness with essential public service delivery to enhance Kolkata's livability and safety.
