In a landmark achievement for public transport in Kerala, the Kerala State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) has scripted history by registering its highest single-day revenue ever. The state-owned transport giant clocked a staggering total collection of Rs 11.53 crore on December 15, setting a new benchmark for its financial performance.
A Breakdown of the Record-Breaking Numbers
The monumental revenue figure comprises two key streams. The core ticket sales, referred to as operating revenue, contributed an unprecedented Rs 10.77 crore. This was further bolstered by non-ticket revenue, which added another Rs 76 lakh to the coffers. This performance marks a significant leap compared to the same period last year, where the ticket revenue on December 16, 2024, stood at Rs 8.57 crore.
Operational Excellence Drives Financial Success
Attributing this remarkable feat to a collective effort, State Transport Minister K B Ganesh Kumar praised the coordinated work of KSRTC Chairman and Managing Director Pramoj Shankar, along with the entire management, employees, supervisors, and officers. The minister highlighted that this significant target was achieved without any hike in ticket fares and under similar operational conditions as previous periods.
The secret behind this financial surge lies in a series of strategic operational improvements. Minister Kumar detailed that a focus on systematic operations has made all KSRTC depots profitable. Key initiatives included fostering healthy competition among depots to meet enhanced revenue targets, drastically reducing the off-road time of buses, and maximizing the number of buses in active service on the roads. These efforts, combined with positive changes in customer service, directly translated into higher earnings.
Sustaining Profitability and Future Implications
This record-breaking day is not an isolated incident but a testament to a sustained turnaround. The minister emphasized that through disciplined and systematic operations, all KSRTC depots are currently operating profitably. This achievement underscores a successful model of reviving a public sector undertaking through efficiency, employee motivation, and customer-centric service improvements, setting a strong precedent for other state transport corporations across India.
