Karnataka Speaker UT Khader Warns MLAs: Dignity Over Hate Politics After Ballari Clash
K'taka Speaker Urges Dignity, Warns on Hate Politics

Karnataka Legislative Assembly Speaker UT Khader has issued a strong call for responsible behaviour from elected representatives, warning that recent events risk damaging the public's perception of all politicians. Speaking at a press conference in Mangaluru on Sunday, the Speaker expressed deep concern over the image of the political class.

Ballari Incident A Warning Bell: Khader's Stern Message

Directly addressing the recent clashes in Ballari, UT Khader stated that the incident was completely uncalled for. He warned that such theatrically staged conflicts and the politics of hate must not be repeated in the state. The Ballari incident, he cautioned, threatens to tarnish the reputation of politicians across party lines, leading the public to view them in a negative light.

"Elected representatives, including MLAs, must conduct themselves responsibly to maintain a good reputation in political life," Khader emphasised. He urged legislators to speak in a dignified manner both inside the Vidhana Soudha and outside. "Speak in a dignified manner rather than engaging in hate politics by issuing threats against each other. What message are you sending? This will only help you lose your respect in society," he told reporters.

The Speaker revealed that he intends to speak with the legislators involved in the Ballari incident—Congress MLA Nara Bharath Reddy and BJP MLA G Janardhana Reddy—to address the issue.

Clarifying the Purpose of the Hate Speech Bill

Responding to queries about the BJP's opposition to the recently passed Hate Speech Bill, Speaker Khader provided a clear rationale for the legislation. He clarified that the bill aims solely to take action against those who actually make hate speeches.

"The purpose of the bill is to curb the dissemination, publication, or promotion of hate speech, and thereby prevent related crimes that cause disharmony and hatred in society. The bill is not targeted at anyone," Khader explained. He stressed that the common goal is peace and harmony, which strengthens the country. He invited those opposing the bill to submit their concerns and any perceived shortcomings in writing for consideration.

On Other State Matters: Demolition, Power Dynamics, and Cockfighting

When questioned about the demolition drive at Kogilu Layout in Bengaluru, the Speaker said the state government would examine the matter. Maintaining his constitutional role's neutrality, he added, "As a speaker of the legislative assembly, I will not comment on it."

Regarding speculation of a power tussle between Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar, Khader downplayed the issue. He stated he was unaware of any such development, noting, "Being a speaker, all political channels are closed for me."

On the law and order issues arising from cockfighting events in coastal districts, Khader highlighted a conflict between police claims of betting and organisers' denials. He pointed out the need for suitable government rules and legislation to address the matter, as organisers defend the practice as part of tradition and ritual. He assured that the issue would be discussed with the law minister and concerned officials.

Through his statements, Speaker UT Khader underscored the critical need for dignity, responsible discourse, and legal clarity to uphold the integrity of Karnataka's political and social fabric.
