Kumaraswamy Slams Bidadi Township Plan as Real Estate

H D Kumaraswamy, former Chief Minister of Karnataka and Janata Dal (Secular) leader, launched a scathing attack on the state government's Bidadi township project, labeling it as an 'official real estate business.' Addressing a press conference at the JD(S) party office in Bengaluru, Kumaraswamy alleged that the government was targeting fertile agricultural land in eight villages under the guise of urban development, integrated townships, and business corridors.

Allegations of Land Grab

Kumaraswamy claimed that the project was not aimed at genuine urban development but was a ploy to benefit private real estate interests at the expense of farmers. He said that the acquisition of prime agricultural land would displace hundreds of families and destroy the region's agrarian economy. The JD(S) leader demanded that the government immediately halt the process and conduct a thorough review.

Government's Defense

The state government, however, has defended the Bidadi township plan, stating that it is a long-term initiative to decongest Bengaluru and promote balanced regional growth. Officials have emphasized that the project would create employment opportunities and boost infrastructure. They also assured that adequate compensation would be provided to affected landowners.

Kumaraswamy dismissed these assurances, arguing that similar projects in the past had only led to exploitation of farmers and environmental degradation. He urged the opposition parties to unite against what he termed as 'anti-farmer policies' of the ruling government.

The controversy has reignited the debate over land acquisition for mega projects in Karnataka, with farmers and activists expressing solidarity with Kumaraswamy's stance.
