In a dramatic turn of events, former Bihar Chief Minister Lalu Prasad Yadav and his wife Rabri Devi have rejected the Y category security cover provided by the central government after their security was downgraded from the elite Z category. The decision has sparked a political controversy, with Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) workers taking matters into their own hands by assuming guard duty armed with sticks outside the couple's residence in Patna.
Security Downgrade Sparks Political Row
The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) recently downgraded the security of Lalu Prasad Yadav from Z to Y category, citing a review of threat perception. The Z category security typically involves a significant number of armed commandos and escort vehicles, while Y category provides a lesser cover. Following the downgrade, the former railway minister and his wife refused to accept the reduced security arrangement, calling it inadequate given their public profile and past threats.
RJD Workers Step In
In response to the rejection of official security, dozens of RJD party workers have volunteered to stand guard outside the couple's home. Armed with sticks and lathis, they have formed a human chain around the premises to ensure safety. Party leaders have claimed that this is a temporary measure until the government restores the original Z category security. "We cannot leave our leaders unprotected. The government's decision is politically motivated," said a senior RJD functionary.
The workers have been organized in shifts, with some staying overnight. Local police have been deployed to maintain law and order but have not intervened in the workers' voluntary security arrangement. The situation has drawn attention to the security protocols for former high-profile political figures in India.
Political Reactions
The development has triggered sharp reactions from opposition parties. The Congress party accused the BJP-led central government of targeting Lalu Prasad Yadav for political reasons. "This is a clear case of vendetta politics. The security of a former chief minister and union minister should not be compromised," said a Congress spokesperson. On the other hand, the ruling BJP defended the decision, stating that security downgrades are based on threat assessments and are routine administrative matters.
Lalu Prasad Yadav, who is also a former Union Minister of Railways, has been a prominent figure in Bihar politics for decades. His wife Rabri Devi served as Chief Minister of Bihar for three terms. The couple has faced several corruption cases, but they continue to enjoy significant support among their followers.
Security Categories in India
The Indian government provides security cover to certain individuals based on threat perception. The categories range from Z+ (highest) to X (lowest). Z category security includes around 10-12 armed commandos and escort vehicles, while Y category provides 4-6 armed guards. The downgrade from Z to Y is often seen as a reduction in threat level. However, in this case, the RJD leaders have questioned the timing and basis of the decision.
As the standoff continues, the RJD has announced plans to hold a protest rally against the security downgrade. Meanwhile, the workers remain vigilant, ensuring that their leaders are protected with whatever means available. The incident underscores the deep political divides in the country and the lengths to which party workers go to protect their leaders.
