Her convoy comes to a halt when a family approaches, requesting her to name their 15-day-old baby girl. Dressed in a vibrant silk saree, Leema Rose steps out gracefully and obliges the request. "Leema Rose," she declares, bestowing her own name upon the infant, which leaves the young mother radiant with joy. Notably, this is a Hindu family, yet the woman asserts she will not alter the name given by Leema Rose, highlighting the candidate's growing influence and personal connection with the electorate.
DMK's Long-Standing Stronghold Under Threat
Such intimate moments and the enthusiastic reception Leema Rose is receiving are beginning to unsettle the DMK, which has maintained a firm grip on the Lalgudi seat for the past two decades. Lalgudi holds strategic importance for the DMK, as it includes Kanakilyanur, the native village of Municipal Administration Minister K N Nehru, and Anbil, the hometown of Education Minister Anbil Mahesh Poyyamozhi. In a bold move, the DMK decided to drop four-time MLA A Soundara Pandian, opting instead to field T Parivallal, a relatively new face. However, this decision has not been well-received by party supporters, creating internal discord.
Adding to the competition, Vijay's TVK has nominated former AIADMK minister Ku Pa Krishnan. The DMK had hoped that Parivallal would benefit from the party's established grassroots presence to secure victory. She declared personal assets worth Rs 1,049 crore, with her family's total wealth, including that of her husband Martin, exceeding Rs 5,000 crore. Her net worth surpasses the combined annual budgets of the Lalgudi municipality and the Pullambadi and Poovalur town panchayats within the constituency, underscoring her immense financial power.
However, Leema Rose is not relying solely on monetary strength. She hails from the Udayar community and practices Christianity, both of which have a significant presence in Lalgudi. This demographic alignment enhances her appeal. Even before her candidacy was officially announced, she had initiated her campaign efforts, demonstrating proactive engagement. "AIADMK was also strong in Lalgudi, but DMK was winning because our past candidates did not offer a tough fight.
