Eid Festivities in Lucknow Marred by Severe LPG Cylinder Shortages and Black-Market Exploitation
As Eid approaches this Saturday, residents of Lucknow are grappling with significant delays in domestic LPG refill supplies, creating a fertile ground for rampant black-marketing. With the festival just days away, many households are resorting to illegal purchases to meet increased cooking demands for traditional Eid dishes.
Black-Market Prices Skyrocket Amid Desperate Demand
According to reports from multiple localities across the city, domestic LPG cylinders that normally cost between Rs 900 and Rs 1,000 are now being illegally sold for Rs 1,800 to Rs 2,500. This price gouging has left many residents with little choice but to pay premium rates.
A resident from Dubagga expressed frustration: "The festival is in the next two days, and we have no other option but to purchase LPG refills from the black market. Our fuel consumption has increased dramatically as we prepare special Eid meals."
Syed Shahid Ali from Daliganj shared a similar predicament: "I booked my cylinder twenty days ago, and it's nearly empty now. To ensure we don't run out during Eid celebrations, I had to buy a refill for Rs 2,000 from alternative sources."
Complaints Mount Over Underweight Cylinders and Extended Waiting Periods
Beyond the price exploitation, consumers are reporting serious issues with cylinder weights and delivery timelines. Numerous social media videos have circulated showing discrepancies between the stated weight on LPG cylinders and actual measurements.
Ved Prakash Gupta, a consumer from Sitapur Road, detailed his experience: "Typically, our cylinders weigh 29-30 kg when delivered. This time, when we weighed the refill, it came to only 27 kg. When we complained to the delivery person, he simply stated he was delivering what he received from the agency."
The waiting periods for legitimate refills have stretched to 3-5 days, exacerbating the crisis. Ashish Jaiswal of Aliganj revealed: "I booked a cylinder on March 12, and it still hasn't been delivered. Despite regular follow-ups with the gas agency, my cylinder remains pending."
Authorities Respond with Crackdowns and Promises of Action
Officials from civil supplies have acknowledged the crisis. Jyoti Gautam stated: "We have been continuously conducting drives against illegal LPG cylinder supply since this crisis began. We will take strict action against any culprits found engaging in black-marketing activities."
Representatives from LPG distribution agencies attributed the situation to supply disruptions combined with heightened seasonal demand, which has placed unprecedented pressure on distribution systems. They assured that efforts are underway to normalize delivery schedules.
Residents Demand Stronger Monitoring and Timely Solutions
The ongoing shortage has prompted calls from residents for stricter monitoring against hoarding and black-marketing practices. Many are urging authorities to ensure timely supply and take decisive action against those exploiting the shortage for profit.
