Panic swept through the state capital of Uttar Pradesh on Thursday as viral social media rumors regarding an impending fuel shortage triggered massive queues at petrol pumps across Lucknow. The sudden surge in demand led to significant traffic congestion, choking vital city stretches including Manoj Pandey Chauraha, La Martiniere College Road, and the bustling Hazratganj area.
Citizens Rush to Fill Tanks Amid Widespread Uncertainty
The chaos began early in the day as WhatsApp messages and social media posts warning of a fuel shortage circulated rapidly among residents. Shreena Singh, a resident of Gomti Nagar, explained her decision to join the queues: "I heard from a friend that petrol was running out, and then I received multiple WhatsApp messages warning of a shortage. That is why I rushed immediately to fill my car's tank."
Similar sentiments were echoed by Vaishnavi Kesarwani, who found herself waiting at the Hazratganj petrol pump. "My friends shared the alarming messages about the shortage. I did not want to take any chances, so I joined the long queues at the petrol pump despite the inconvenience," she stated.
Traffic Snarls and Personal Struggles Amid the Frenzy
The panic buying created severe logistical challenges throughout the city. Ahmer Khan, a government employee at Hazratganj, was trapped in his vehicle for nearly an hour despite not requiring fuel, as the congestion from petrol pump queues completely blocked his path.
Sanjay Yadav, an employee at a private firm, struggled to navigate his two-wheeler through the crowded lines as people jostled aggressively to cut ahead in the queues. Meanwhile, Manish Verma, another government employee, arrived with his son and both family cars to secure fuel, only to find themselves ensnared in the extensive waiting lines.
Officials Clarify Situation and Urge Calm
Alok Trivedi, General Secretary of the Lucknow Petrol Dealers Association, confirmed that the sudden, unprecedented demand had temporarily emptied fuel tanks at several stations. However, he assured that petrol and diesel supplies were promptly refilled shortly after the initial chaos subsided.
Lucknow Mayor Sushma Kharkwal addressed the situation directly, stating unequivocally that there was no actual shortage of fuel in the city. She appealed to citizens not to be influenced by online rumors, warning that panic buying could create an artificial crisis and disrupt essential city services.
District Magistrate Vishakh G provided further clarification: "There is absolutely no shortage of petrol or diesel in Lucknow. Supplies are being continuously ensured in full coordination with Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL), and no limits have been imposed at any petrol pumps. Fuel is being made available for everyone without restriction."
