Ludhiana Residents Stage Protest Against Atal Apartments Draw Amid SBS Nagar Commercialization Concerns
On Tuesday, residents of G Block in Shaheed Bhagat Singh (SBS) Nagar, Ludhiana, staged a vocal protest opposite Nehru Sidhant Kendra. The demonstration coincided with the draw of lots for Atal Apartments, a housing initiative that has sparked significant local discontent. Police personnel were strategically deployed outside the venue to ensure the event proceeded without disruption, highlighting the tense atmosphere.
Allegations of Faulty Policies and Illegal Activities
The protesters, including a local BJP leader, voiced deep-seated grievances regarding the 475-acre SBS Nagar scheme. Originally envisioned as a residential area, residents claim it has gradually transformed into a commercial hub due to what they describe as faulty policies and lax enforcement by the Ludhiana Improvement Trust (LIT). They allege that illegal commercial operations are rampant across several residential blocks, undermining the area's intended character.
Specific complaints centered on construction violations. According to protesters, while LIT-approved designs permit buildings only up to two-and-a-half storeys, numerous illegal structures of four to five storeys have emerged in various zones. A particularly egregious example cited was a five-storey hotel allegedly being constructed on a 40-square-yard plot reserved for the economically weaker section (EWS) in E Block. This, they argue, exemplifies the broader issues of non-compliance and poor oversight.
Official Response and Ongoing Tensions
In response to the protest, LIT officials stated that they had requested police assistance to address encroachments and that action would be taken once the necessary force was provided. This acknowledgment suggests a recognition of the problems but also points to potential delays in enforcement, fueling resident frustrations.
The protest underscores a growing clash between urban development plans and community expectations in Ludhiana. As the city expands, such disputes highlight the challenges of balancing residential needs with commercial growth, especially when regulatory frameworks are perceived as inadequate.
