Ludhiana's Sunday Market Encroachments: A Persistent Civic Challenge
In Ludhiana, despite repeated assurances from civic authorities, temporary encroachments in old city areas, particularly the bustling Sunday markets, continue to evade effective action. Officials tasked with clearing these encroachments often avoid these crowded zones, such as Chaura Bazaar, where hawkers dominate with slogans like "raste ka maal saste mein." These markets are immensely popular, drawing shoppers from beyond the city, but local residents increasingly opt for weekday shopping to sidestep the weekend chaos.
Traffic Woes Amplified by Construction and Encroachments
The traffic situation has deteriorated significantly due to ongoing road construction projects, including the elevated road from Jagraon Bridge to Jalandhar Bypass and work near Damoria Bridge. Temporary encroachments exacerbate the frustration, forcing commuters into lengthy detours. The Field Ganj market is a critical concern, with ambulances frequently stranded in traffic jams on the main road leading to civil and CMC hospitals, posing serious risks to emergency medical services.
Ineffective Civic Drives and Public Frustration
Senior deputy mayor Rakesh Prashar organized drives to remove encroachments from Field Ganj, Chaura Bazaar, and adjacent markets, yet these efforts have yielded little change. Municipal corporation teams are notably absent on weekends, when encroachments peak. Mayor Inderjit Kaur recently pledged strict action, but beyond announcements, no concrete steps have materialized. Residents express deep frustration, noting that encroachments quickly resurface after removal, rendering the exercises futile.
Harish Sharma, a Civil Lines resident, stated, "There is no point in visiting the markets on Sunday. If I need to go to old markets, I choose a working day to avoid the overwhelming crowds. Even on weekdays, it's challenging to bring family members." He emphasized the cyclical nature of the problem, where encroachments reappear shortly after clearance.
Citizen Proposals for Decongestion and Growth
Rahul Verma, a businessman from Sarabha Nagar, proposed developing new cluster-wise wholesale markets to alleviate congestion. He suggested areas for electronics, groceries, medicines, garments, and more, with integrated facilities like banks, food joints, parking, and warehouses. This approach, he argued, would not only decongest the old city but also boost business volume by creating organized commercial hubs.
As Ludhiana grapples with these issues, the gap between civic promises and on-ground realities remains stark, highlighting the need for sustained and effective governance to address encroachments and improve urban mobility.
