Madurai Junction Becomes Accident-Prone Spot
The Gomathipuram Sixth Main Road junction near the Velu Nachiyar flyover in Madurai has become a hazardous location for commuters. Speeding vehicles exiting the flyover often collide with traffic on the road below, leading to frequent accidents. On Friday, a tragic incident occurred when a two-wheeler collided with a town bus at the junction, resulting in the death of a man.
Residents Demand Immediate Action
D Raghavan, president of the Gomathipuram Resident's Welfare Association, highlighted the urgent need for safety measures. He stated that residents have repeatedly requested officials to address the issue. A speed breaker should be installed on Sivaganga Road to reduce the speed of vehicles heading towards Pandi Kovil. While a speed breaker exists on the opposite side of the road, the lack of white markings causes some drivers to brake suddenly, worsening traffic congestion.
Illegal Parking Adds to the Problem
Another major concern is illegal parking along Sivaganga Main Road. Raghavan suggested installing cameras to deter motorists from parking unlawfully. He also emphasized the need for clearly marked pedestrian crossings and reflective road studs to enhance safety for pedestrians.
Official Response
A corporation official confirmed that discussions with the highways department are underway to resolve the issues. The official stated that markings will be improved to increase road safety, no-parking signs will be put up, and action will be taken against illegal parking. However, progress has been slow due to the assembly elections, but the work is expected to be completed as soon as possible.
