Maharashtra Government Launches Inquiry Into Sensitive CDR Leak Case
Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, who also holds the crucial state home portfolio, made a significant announcement on Sunday regarding the controversial leak of sensitive investigative data. The Maharashtra government will conduct a thorough inquiry into how the Call Detail Records (CDR) of rape-accused astrologer Ashok Kharat found their way into the hands of private individuals, bypassing official channels.
Political Storm Over Damania's Revelations
The CDR controversy erupted following explosive claims made by activist Anjali Damania on April 3. Damania alleged she received anonymous CDRs showing that Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde made seventeen separate calls to Kharat in the past. According to her allegations, several other prominent politicians also contacted the controversial astrologer during an unspecified period, though specific names and details remain undisclosed.
A major political confrontation has developed in response to these claims, with Shiv Sena ministers and leaders raising serious questions about how such sensitive information was leaked to third parties. Political observers suggest this could represent a calculated attempt to politically corner Deputy Chief Minister Shinde, though Fadnavis emphasized that the judicial system requires substantial evidence rather than private conversations.
Fadnavis Emphasizes Evidence-Based Justice
Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of a 'Sant Sammelan' gathering in Nashik, Chief Minister Fadnavis clarified the government's position. "First and foremost, obtaining CDRs falls exclusively within the domain of authorized investigating agencies," Fadnavis stated firmly. "The state government will definitely inquire into how the CDR was leaked and identify precisely who leaked it to private individuals."
The Chief Minister elaborated on his approach to justice, stating, "Our judicial system relies on strong, verifiable evidence rather than mere allegations and counter-allegations about who contacted whom. Action will be taken only against those who were party to the heinous crimes committed by Ashok Kharat."
Parallel Investigations Into Kharat's Assets
In a related development, Fadnavis confirmed that the Enforcement Directorate (ED) has taken formal cognisance of Kharat's bank accounts and properties. The federal financial investigation agency has already initiated its inquiry into the astrologer's financial dealings, adding another layer to the ongoing investigations.
"The Special Investigation Team is performing excellent work and has uncovered numerous significant details about Kharat's activities," Fadnavis reported. "The SIT has earned public confidence, with people coming forward to register complaints—twelve so far—and share valuable information. According to my latest information, the ED has commenced its inquiry after reviewing the findings uncovered thus far. Once all land properties are properly mapped, the state government will also take appropriate legal steps."
Infrastructure Development for Simhastha Kumbh Mela
During his address to the gathering of seers and spiritual leaders, Chief Minister Fadnavis also highlighted substantial infrastructure investments. The government is currently spending approximately Rs 30,000 crore—with potential increases reaching Rs 35,000 crore—to develop comprehensive infrastructure in Nashik city for the forthcoming Simhastha Kumbh Mela, one of Hinduism's largest religious gatherings.
The dual focus on investigating sensitive data leaks while simultaneously preparing for major religious events demonstrates the government's multifaceted approach to governance, balancing law enforcement priorities with cultural and infrastructure development.
