Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis Announces Detailed Report on Davos MoUs and Past Deals

In a significant development ahead of the state budget session, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis declared on Sunday that the government will present a comprehensive report on the Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) worth Rs 30 lakh crore signed at the World Economic Forum in Davos last month. Additionally, the report will include the current status of past agreements, addressing growing concerns over transparency and implementation.

Opposition Demands White Paper and Criticizes Government

The announcement comes after the opposition, led by Congress and other parties, demanded a white paper on previous deals, citing a lack of accountability. The opposition boycotted the customary tea party on the eve of the budget session, highlighting tensions in the political landscape. At a press conference held at the state guest house, Sahyadri, Fadnavis revealed that 13 bills will be introduced during the one-month session, with two pending from the previous session, all of which are expected to be passed. "We shall give sufficient time for discussions," he assured, emphasizing the government's commitment to legislative processes.

Key Issues Raised by Opposition Leaders

The opposition, addressing the media separately, raised multiple critical issues:

  • Plane Crash Inquiry: Congress MLA Vijay Wadettiwar questioned the government's handling of a recent plane crash, stating, "Govt has given only two lines of explanation that no one should raise questions about the accident. Why not? Is it a conspiracy or an accident? This is being discussed all over the country."
  • Leadership Vacancies: Sena (UBT) MLA Aaditya Thackeray pointed to vacant posts of the leader of opposition in both Houses, asking why the Mahayuti government, with its majority, was "afraid" of these positions. Fadnavis responded that such decisions rest with the assembly speaker and legislative council chairman.
  • Corruption Allegations: Congress MLC Satej Patil demanded the resignation of FDA minister Narhari Zirwal over a bribery case involving a staffer. Fadnavis clarified that Zirwal's name did not appear in the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) investigation, but acknowledged the incident's impact on the government's image, stating, "We have zero tolerance towards corruption... I have given clear instructions to ACB to take action if any corruption is found."

Political Dynamics and Internal Rivalries

Fadnavis highlighted the opposition's disunity by noting the absence of NCP (SP) at their press conference, a six-page letter with grammatical errors signed by a former MLA, and other inconsistencies. Sena (UBT) MLA Bhaskar Jadhav later explained that NCP (SP) leaders arrived late due to a communication gap but asserted, "But we are all together as MVA." Meanwhile, Thackeray criticized the Mahayuti government for internal rivalries, likely referring to tensions between Fadnavis and deputy Eknath Shinde over who is the government's "infra man."

Compensation and Farmer Concerns

Thackeray also slammed the government for offering only Rs 5 lakh compensation to the family of a victim in the Mulund Metro concrete parapet crash, calling it inadequate. Wadettiwar linked the new India-US trade deal to the ongoing farmer suicide crisis in Maharashtra, alleging it "will break the backs of farmers." In response, Shinde urged the opposition to attend the budget session and engage constructively, promising, "Govt will address all issues raised by the opposition in the House."

Budget Presentation and Legislative Agenda

Fadnavis noted that due to the death of deputy CM Ajit Pawar, the responsibility of presenting the budget has fallen upon him. The government aims to pass all pending bills and ensure thorough discussions during the session, reflecting a focus on governance amid political scrutiny.
