Maharashtra Labour Minister Denies Free LPG Cylinder Circular for Construction Workers
State Labour Minister Akash Fundkar on Monday categorically denied that the labour department has issued any circular regarding the provision of free LPG cylinders to construction workers. He labeled posts circulating on social and electronic media as "completely false" and emphasized that no such directive exists.
Minister Addresses Misinformation Causing Statewide Confusion
Speaking to media outlets, Fundkar explained that the misinformation has created significant confusion among construction workers across Maharashtra. "The circular claiming free LPG cylinders to them is completely incorrect. No such directive has been issued by the labour department," he stated firmly. The minister stressed that while the department remains committed to worker welfare through coordination with developer bodies, free LPG distribution is not part of current initiatives.
Department Plans Alternative Fuel Arrangements at Construction Sites
Fundkar revealed that the labour department will collaborate closely with builders and construction companies to ensure adequate LPG supply or alternative fuel arrangements at construction sites, particularly for workers residing on-site. "In several states, workers have left for their hometowns due to lack of fuel and other basic amenities. We will convene a meeting with developer bodies to ensure that workers do not face any difficulties at construction sites in Maharashtra," he announced.
The minister acknowledged that construction workers frequently encounter multiple challenges on sites, ranging from housing and sanitation access to fuel supply for cooking. He clarified that while the government provides welfare schemes and benefits for registered workers under the Building and Other Construction Workers (BOCW) welfare board, free LPG cylinders are not currently included in these provisions.
Industry Response and Worker Concerns
Confederation of Real Estate Developers' Associations of India (Credai) president Manish Jain commented on the situation, stating, "We have requested our members to extend all support to workers and their families, including providing pre-packed meals and other cooking alternatives. Till date, there has been no major labour movement, and they are largely on-site with work being carried out normally."
However, construction workers expressed distress about their current circumstances. Ramesh Patil, a construction worker in Pune, shared, "It's very stressful. We have to cook for our families without proper fuel, and it takes extra time after a long day's work. Many of us are struggling."
Statewide Verification Drive Planned Amid Global LPG Crisis
Senior labour department officials reiterated that all welfare schemes and benefits for workers are communicated exclusively through official government channels. "Workers should rely on verified circulars and not on messages or posts on social media, which can often be misleading," emphasized an official.
The department is planning a comprehensive statewide drive to inspect working conditions, fuel supply, and other welfare arrangements at construction sites, particularly in urban centers where large infrastructure and housing projects are underway. This initiative comes against the backdrop of the ongoing LPG crisis sparked by global tensions in West Asia.
With nearly 32.64 lakh registered construction workers in Maharashtra, officials assured that the department is working diligently to ensure their basic needs are met. Coordination with developers, municipal authorities, and worker representatives will be crucial to preventing hardships and maintaining construction work continuity across the state.
