Maharashtra Legislative Assembly Confronts Government Over Alleged Acid Attack on Minor Girl

The Maharashtra legislative assembly witnessed heated exchanges on Wednesday as opposition leaders launched sharp criticism against the state government following an alleged acid attack on a Class 6 girl in Sangamner's Ahilyanagar district. The incident, described as "extremely disturbing" by Congress Legislature Party leader Vijay Wadettiwar, prompted urgent demands for government accountability and immediate action.

Congress Leader Demands Immediate Discussion Through Adjournment Motion

Raising the matter through an adjournment motion, Vijay Wadettiwar demanded an immediate discussion in the House, emphasizing that the young victim remains in serious medical condition while the perpetrators have not yet been apprehended. "How were the accused able to flee after committing such a serious offence?" Wadettiwar questioned, pointing to what he described as systemic failures in law enforcement.

The Congress leader went further to criticize local police authorities, alleging both inefficiency and corruption in their handling of the case. He warned that such lapses in the justice system ultimately embolden criminals and create an environment where vulnerable citizens, particularly women and minor girls, remain at risk.

Pattern of Violence Against Minor Girls Highlighted

Wadettiwar highlighted what he characterized as a disturbing rise in attacks against minor girls across Maharashtra, asserting that the state government has failed to implement effective measures to curb these crimes. His criticism extended beyond this specific incident to address what he portrayed as broader systemic failures in protecting vulnerable populations.

Congress member Nana Patole joined the criticism, urging that the injured girl be immediately transferred to Mumbai for superior medical treatment at government expense. He expressed grave concern about the severity of her facial injuries and their potential long-term impact on her future, while also noting the anxiety experienced by both the victim's family and concerned citizens due to the delayed apprehension of the accused.

Speaker Directs Government Response

Assembly Speaker Rahul Narwekar took official note of the issue and instructed the government to submit a detailed statement to the House as soon as possible. This directive places formal pressure on the administration to address both the specific incident and the broader concerns raised about women's safety and law enforcement effectiveness in the state.

The legislative confrontation underscores growing concerns about violence against women and children in Maharashtra, with opposition parties positioning themselves as advocates for stronger protective measures and more responsive governance. The acid attack incident has become a focal point for broader debates about public safety, police accountability, and government responsibility toward vulnerable citizens.
