Maharashtra Economic Survey Spotlights Nagpur and Amravati as Vital Growth Engines in Vidarbha Region
The latest economic survey for Maharashtra, unveiled on Thursday, has formally recognized Nagpur and Amravati as pivotal growth centers within the Vidarbha region. This comprehensive report provides detailed insights into the economic performance and developmental trajectories of these two major cities, underscoring their increasing significance in the state's overall economic landscape.
Nagpur District's Economic Prowess and Top Rankings
According to the survey, Nagpur district has achieved a remarkable real gross domestic product (GDP) of ₹1.34 lakh crore for the 2024-25 period. This inflation-adjusted figure, which represents the total value of all goods and services produced within the district, catapults Nagpur into the elite top four districts in Maharashtra based on this critical economic metric. Furthermore, the per capita nominal net domestic product for Nagpur district is reported at over ₹3.67 lakh, reflecting a robust standard of living and economic productivity among its residents.
Gadchiroli's Steady Economic Transformation and Growth
In a notable development, Gadchiroli district, which is rapidly shedding its longstanding image as a Maoist-affected area, recorded a real GDP of ₹11,778 crore. On a per capita basis, this translates to ₹1.56 lakh, indicating a steady and consistent growth trajectory compared to previous financial years. This positive trend highlights the district's ongoing economic revitalization and improving socio-economic conditions.
Massive Investments Fueling Vidarbha's Development
The survey reveals that the Vidarbha region has attracted substantial investments totaling over ₹95,000 crore through various industrial and commercial ventures. The Nagpur division has been the primary beneficiary, securing an impressive share of over ₹87,000 crore, positioning it as the second-highest recipient after the Pune division. In contrast, the Amravati division has garnered investments worth ₹8,719 crore, placing it marginally ahead of the Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar division, which encompasses the Marathwada region.
Job Creation and MSME Contributions in Nagpur and Amravati
Businesses operating within the Nagpur division have been instrumental in generating 1.90 lakh jobs, while the Amravati division has contributed a substantial 28 lakh jobs, as highlighted in the survey. Additionally, Nagpur boasts over 8.42 lakh Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSME) units, employing approximately 35 lakh individuals. Amravati follows with 4.84 lakh MSME units, providing livelihoods for around 13 lakh persons. These figures underscore the critical role of MSMEs in driving employment and economic activity across both divisions.
Nagpur's Housing Market Performance and Agricultural Statistics
The House Price Index (HPI) for Nagpur, which measures the pace of housing rate growth, stood at 112.7 for the second quarter of 2025-26. This index is on par with the national average, with Nagpur district outperforming major metropolitan areas such as Mumbai, Thane, and Pune in terms of housing market dynamics. The survey also provides agricultural insights, noting that Nagpur district is home to 2,05,000 cattle and 449,000 buffaloes, reflecting its diverse economic base encompassing both urban and rural sectors.
