Mahayuti Secures Historic Victory in Kolhapur, Ending Congress's 25-Year Rule
Mahayuti Wins Kolhapur, Congress Loses After 25 Years

Mahayuti Alliance Makes History in Kolhapur Municipal Corporation

The political landscape of Kolhapur has undergone a dramatic transformation. For the first time in the history of the Kolhapur Municipal Corporation, the BJP-led Mahayuti alliance has stormed to power. This victory ends the Congress party's uninterrupted rule, which lasted for an impressive twenty-five years.

A Long-Standing Congress Stronghold Falls

Congress had dominated the Kolhapur Municipal Corporation since its establishment. The KMC came into existence in 1972. Initially, elections were not contested on formal party symbols. Political parties sponsored candidates instead. Throughout this period, Congress maintained control without significant challenge.

This election cycle has rewritten that history. The Mahayuti coalition, which includes the BJP, Shiv Sena, and NCP, fought the elections jointly. Their coordinated effort proved successful against the incumbent Congress administration.

Election Results and Political Reactions

Out of the total eighty-one seats in the KMC, Congress emerged as the single largest party. They secured thirty-five seats. The BJP followed closely with twenty-five seats. Shiv Sena won fifteen seats, and the NCP captured the remaining seats to complete the Mahayuti majority.

Congress MLA Satej Patil, who led his party's campaign in Kolhapur, acknowledged the defeat. "We put up a strong fight but could not succeed," Patil stated. "A little more effort and I think we would have easily returned to power. I want to thank the people of Kolhapur for reposing their faith in us. We emerged as the single largest party, reflecting the confidence people still have in Congress."

Patil also admitted to strategic errors during the campaign. He mentioned mistakes in seat allocation for their alliance partner, Shiv Sena (UBT), in at least two prabhags. "I think we made some mistakes. Otherwise, we would have returned to power," he conceded.

Despite the loss, Patil vowed that Congress would continue its political fight. "We will continue to fight for the people of Kolhapur. We will keep the KMC on its toes and raise people's issues regularly. Our fight will continue," he asserted.

Mahayuti Celebrates a Landmark Achievement

BJP MP Dhananjay Mahadik expressed jubilation over the results. "In the past, BJP used to have only one corporator. This success is monumental for our party. We will have our own mayor now," Mahadik said. He referenced his earlier prediction about Congress's fate, stating, "I had said the Congress will sit at home after January 15. My words have come true. What is happening in Delhi is also happening at the local level."

NCP Minister Hassan Mushrif dismissed any speculation about his party joining forces with Congress. "We will remain with the Mahayuti," he firmly told reporters, solidifying the alliance's unity.

Notable Winners and Losers

The election saw several prominent figures achieve victory. The list of winners includes:

  • Rajesh Latkar
  • Ruturaj Kshirsagar, son of MLA Rajesh Kshirsagar
  • Satyajit Jadhav, son of MLA Jayshree Jadhav
  • Ashkin Aajrekar, son of former mayor Nilofer Aajrekar
  • NCP city chief Aadil Faras

Conversely, some experienced politicians faced defeat. Key losers in the KMC polls were former BJP city chief Rahul Chikode, Prakash Naiknaware, and Ajit More.

Broader Context in Western Maharashtra

Kolhapur held particular significance for Congress in Western Maharashtra. It was the only major city where the party had high hopes of retaining power. In contrast, Congress has faced severe setbacks in other urban centers like Pune, Pimpri-Chinchwad, Ahilyanagar, and Satara, where its presence has been nearly decimated.

Ichalkaranji Municipal Corporation Results

In a related development, the Mahayuti alliance also secured a majority in the Ichalkaranji Municipal Corporation. They won forty-seven seats out of the total. BJP emerged as the single largest party there with forty-three seats. The Shiv Shahu Vikas Aghadi secured seventeen votes, while Shinde Sena won three and NCP managed only one seat. The IMC election featured sixteen prabhags with two hundred thirty candidates in the fray.

This sweeping victory across municipal corporations signals a potent shift in Maharashtra's local governance. The Mahayuti's coordinated strategy has effectively challenged long-standing political dynasties, setting a new precedent for future elections in the region.
