BJP MLA Maithili Thakur Launches Scathing Attack on Lalu Yadav in Bihar Assembly
In her maiden address to the Bihar Legislative Assembly on Friday, BJP legislator and acclaimed singer Maithili Thakur delivered a pointed critique directed at Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) chief Lalu Prasad Yadav. The 25-year-old lawmaker from Darbhanga invoked powerful imagery from the ancient Indian epic, the Mahabharata, to draw stark contrasts between the state's governance before and after 2005.
Mahabharata Analogy Highlights Governance Contrasts
Without initially naming specific individuals, Thakur likened the pre-2005 administrative period to the rule of Dhritarashtra, the blind king from the Mahabharata. She asserted that, much like Dhritarashtra, who was more preoccupied with his son Duryodhana than the welfare of his kingdom, Hastinapur, the leadership of that era showed little concern for the citizens' plight.
"Whenever I reflect on that time, I am reminded of Dhritarashtra's Hastinapur," Thakur stated. "The king was not worried about Hastinapur, only about his Duryodhana." This analogy was widely interpreted as a direct reference to Lalu Prasad Yadav and his son, former deputy chief minister Tejashwi Yadav.
Critique of "Jungle Raj" and Praise for Current Governance
Thakur characterized the earlier period as an era of "jungle raj," alleging that Bihar suffered significant setbacks in critical areas such as education and public safety under that regime. She provided a personal anecdote to illustrate the transformation in law and order, noting that before 2005, it was nearly impossible to venture out after evening hours due to safety concerns.
"People used to warn, 'Don't get out of the car after 5 pm; it's dangerous,'" she recalled. "Today, as an artist and MLA, I can leave Darbhanga at 3 am and reach my home in Patna safely. This change clearly reflects the improved law and order situation."
Thakur extended her praise to Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, crediting his leadership with ushering in an era of good governance. "When Nitish Kumar assumed power, good governance arrived," she emphasized, highlighting the tangible improvements in public safety and administrative efficiency.
Impact of Government Schemes on Education
The BJP MLA also underscored the positive effects of the state's bicycle scheme for schoolgirls, a flagship initiative under the current administration. She shared insights from her own village, where educational engagement among girls saw a remarkable uptick following the implementation of the program.
"In my own village, where there was barely any discussion about schooling, girls began attending school regularly after the cycle programme started," Thakur explained. "Though the opposition mocked it initially, today it stands as a model for the entire country."
Her speech, blending cultural references with political commentary, marked a significant moment in the assembly proceedings, drawing attention to the ongoing debates over Bihar's developmental trajectory and governance models.
