Panthic Conference in Majitha Amplifies Calls for MP Amritpal Singh's Release
The demand for the release of Khadur Sahib Member of Parliament and president of the Akali Dal Waris Punjab De, Amritpal Singh, gained significant momentum during a major panthic conference held at Majitha on Monday. Several prominent leaders vociferously called for his immediate release from custody and urged the government to permit the utilization of the MP Local Area Development funds allocated for his constituency.
Amritpal Singh's Current Legal Status and Father's Allegations
Amritpal Singh is currently incarcerated in Assam's Dibrugarh Central Jail under the stringent provisions of the National Security Act. Addressing the sizable gathering, his father, Tarsem Singh, launched a forceful critique of the political landscape. He alleged that the Majitha constituency has been long plagued by a severe drug epidemic, with recurring incidents of drug abuse and related fatalities frequently coming to public attention.
Tarsem Singh asserted that his son, Amritpal, had consistently and courageously fought to eradicate this drug menace from the heart of Punjab. He claimed there was immense public enthusiasm and a strong desire among the people to witness Amritpal's return so he could continue his vigorous campaign against narcotics. This includes the Khalsa Vahir initiative he started, which aims to encourage the youth to shun drugs and wholeheartedly adopt traditional Sikh values and discipline.
Critique of Traditional Politics and Vision for a New Movement
In a broader political indictment, Tarsem Singh alleged that Punjab's established political parties had betrayed the trust of the people for decades. He stated that the public is now actively searching for sincere, principled leadership that is deeply rooted in panthic, or Sikh community, ideology. He emphasized that the Akali Dal Waris Punjab De is not merely a conventional political party but is transforming into a growing people's movement.
This movement, he declared, is fundamentally committed to three core objectives:
- Safeguarding the rights and interests of Punjab.
- Preserving the distinct cultural and religious identity of the Sikh community.
- Securing a prosperous and better future for the state's youth.
Veiled Attack on Political Rivals and Call to Action
In remarks perceived as a veiled attack on Shiromani Akali Dal leader Bikram Singh Majithia, Tarsem Singh issued a warning. He stated that those individuals involved in the drug trade, who have historically treated Majitha as their stronghold and ruined generations of youth through narcotics, would now face a formidable and united response from the awakened populace.
"Saving Punjab's youth from the clutches of drugs and restoring genuine prosperity in the state is the urgent and paramount need of the hour," he declared emphatically to the conference attendees.
Party Officials Outline Key Demands and Political Strategy
Shamsher Singh Padhri, an office bearer of Akali Dal Waris Punjab De, outlined the party's primary demands. He confirmed that securing the release of Amritpal Singh remains their top priority, coupled with the release of his MPLAD funds. These funds, he argued, are crucial and should be spent on the urgent development needs of the Khadur Sahib constituency, which is currently without its elected representative's oversight.
Padhri also highlighted the political significance of the gathering, noting that the panthic conference at Majitha represents one of the major preparatory assemblies ahead of the pivotal 2027 state assembly elections. In a related development, he mentioned that Faridkot Member of Parliament Sarabjit Singh Khalsa is scheduled to meet the Punjab governor to formally present these concerns and demands.
The conference was also attended by Amritpal Singh's mother, Balinder Kaur, along with several other senior leaders of the Akali Dal Waris Punjab De, underscoring the collective nature of the campaign for his release and the party's broader political mobilization.
