Mamata Banerjee Alleges Malicious Attempts to Disqualify Her Candidacy in Bhowanipore
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee made serious allegations on Saturday, claiming that deliberate attempts were made to cancel her nomination from the Bhowanipore assembly constituency. The Trinamool Congress supremo asserted that two fabricated affidavits were filed against her with the specific intention of disqualifying her candidacy.
Nomination Process and Scrutiny Details
Chief Minister Banerjee had formally submitted her nomination papers on April 8. Following the mandatory scrutiny process, her nomination was officially accepted 48 hours later on April 10. This clearance came after election authorities examined all documentation and resolved various objections raised against her candidacy.
Post-scrutiny, Bhowanipore now features 13 confirmed candidates, placing it among the constituencies with the highest number of contestants in West Bengal. Interestingly, independent candidates outnumber those representing registered political parties, with eight independents in the fray.
Allegations of False Affidavits and Political Motives
According to reliable sources, the two affidavits targeting Banerjee were submitted by a 44-year-old independent candidate from Nadia district. Both complaints were ultimately dismissed by election authorities after thorough verification.
The Chief Minister delivered a strongly worded statement regarding these developments: "Our fight is not with the BJP, but with the BJP's 'vanishing machine'. In my own constituency, those traitors filed two false affidavits against me to cancel my nomination. They did not succeed but remember, they tried... They made many efforts to stop me from contesting. So, you can understand: if they can do this to me, what can they do to you?"
Specific Complaints and Resolution
The objections against Banerjee's nomination centered on two primary issues:
- Name Mismatch Allegation: One complaint involved a supposed discrepancy concerning Ismat Hakim, the Chief Minister's proposer and wife of Kolkata Mayor Firhad Hakim. The objection claimed Hakim previously used her premarital surname, Ismat Ara, but has since updated all official documents to her marital name, Ismat Hakim. She has served as Banerjee's proposer in every Bhowanipore election since 2011. The matter was resolved only after she presented comprehensive documentation refuting the charges.
- Criminal Cases Allegation: Another objection alleged incorrect information regarding criminal cases, claiming Banerjee had faced charges two decades ago during her tenure as an opposition leader in Bengal. No evidence was produced to substantiate this claim, and Banerjee had appropriately marked "not applicable" in the relevant column of her nomination form.
A senior Trinamool Congress leader overseeing Bhowanipore elections revealed: "Usually, these matters take a couple of minutes. But we had an inkling of this when all the proposers were made to wait for two hours after the CM filed her nomination."
EVM Configuration Concerns and Resolution
The Trinamool Congress faced an additional logistical challenge in Bhowanipore. Initially, 17 candidates had filed nominations, creating a potential problem since Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) can only display a maximum of 16 candidates. This raised the possibility that Banerjee's name might have been relegated to a second EVM.
The party strongly objected to this scenario, with a senior leader emphasizing: "A sitting Chief Minister cannot be pushed to a second EVM. It would have caused significant confusion among voters."
Fortunately, with four nominations subsequently cancelled, the total candidate count reduced to 13, eliminating the need for multiple EVMs and ensuring all candidates appear on a single machine.
The developments in Bhowanipore highlight the intense political competition and procedural challenges characterizing West Bengal's electoral landscape, with even established political figures facing unexpected obstacles during the nomination process.
