A tragic incident near the Calicut International Airport has claimed the life of a young man who was visiting a popular spot to watch aircraft. The victim, identified as Jithin, a 30-year-old from Malappuram, died on Tuesday after a fatal fall from the Venkulam viewpoint.
Details of the Tragic Accident
The accident occurred in the early hours of Tuesday. Jithin had gone to the Venkulam area with his friends to enjoy the views of planes landing and taking off from the nearby airport. Reports indicate that he accidentally slipped and fell from the viewpoint. During the fall, he suffered catastrophic injuries when a tree branch pierced his neck.
Upon being alerted, Karipur Police and local residents rushed to the scene. They immediately took the injured man to a private hospital in Kondotty. Given the severity of his condition, he was later shifted to the Kozhikode Medical College Hospital. Unfortunately, despite all efforts, doctors could not save his life.
A Popular Yet Perilous Spot
The Venkulam viewpoint draws hundreds of visitors daily due to its unparalleled, close-up view of aircraft operations at the Karipur airport. However, the terrain in this area is notoriously extremely risky and hazardous. This is not the first incident of its kind here. In response to previous similar accidents, the Karipur Police had installed warning boards in the area to caution visitors about the dangers.
Aftermath and Survivors
The community has been left in shock by this sudden loss. Jithin is survived by his two sisters, Ashwati and Arya. The incident has once again cast a spotlight on the safety concerns surrounding unofficial viewing points near airports and other infrastructure, raising questions about the need for more robust preventive measures beyond just warning signs.
Authorities continue to investigate the precise circumstances of the fall, but the event stands as a grim reminder of the fine line between leisure and peril at such unprotected locations.
