District Minister Dinesh Gundu Rao has taken decisive action to address the pollution plaguing the Nandini River in Mangaluru, directing officials to modernize the aging sewage treatment plant at Munchoor and undertake comprehensive cleaning of the water body.
Immediate Measures for Sewage Treatment Plant
Following a crucial meeting about the river pollution caused by alleged discharge of untreated water, Minister Rao revealed that the current STP at Munchoor uses outdated technology and requires immediate upgrading. He has instructed Mangalore City Corporation officials to prepare a detailed estimate for installing the latest treatment technology at the facility.
"Once the estimate is prepared, I will speak to the minister for urban development for the release of funds for the same," Rao assured reporters. The minister emphasized the urgency of the situation, noting that the existing plant's obsolete systems contribute to the pollution problem.
Short-term Solutions and River Cleaning
To ensure continuous operation of the treatment plant, authorities have decided to procure a generator through a tender process that will be completed by February. Until the permanent generator becomes available, officials have been directed to arrange for a hired generator to prevent any disruption in sewage treatment that could lead to untreated water entering the river.
Addressing the visible pollution in the Nandini River, Minister Rao disclosed that officials have been instructed to prepare an estimate for dredging the water body to remove accumulated sludge. This comprehensive cleaning operation aims to restore the river's health and prevent further environmental damage.
Infrastructure Development and Public Services
When questioned about road conditions in the region, the minister confirmed that MCC has floated a tender worth Rs 160 crore for road repairs and other emergency works. These infrastructure improvements are scheduled to commence shortly, addressing long-standing public concerns about transportation infrastructure.
Minister Rao also highlighted his directive to officials to implement measures preventing future water crises in the region. He emphasized the need for proactive planning to ensure uninterrupted water supply to local residents, with contingency plans ready for implementation if needed.
In a significant development for public access, the district minister's office at Praja Soudha (DC office) has been officially opened. Citizens can now visit the office to submit their grievances and seek resolution for various issues affecting their communities.
Karavali Utsav Preparations Underway
The minister announced that the much-anticipated Karavali Utsav will be organized from December 20 to January 4. During a preparatory meeting for the festival, Rao directed officials to ensure all necessary arrangements are made for the successful conduct of cultural, painting, adventure, and nature-related programs.
Festival organizers plan to feature diverse attractions including Beach Utsav, kite festival, surfing competitions, and various cultural performances. The extensive programming aims to showcase the rich cultural heritage of the coastal region while providing entertainment and engagement opportunities for residents and visitors alike.
