Marathi Border Movement Leader Dipak Dalvi Passes Away at 84 in Kolhapur
Dipak Dalvi, the prominent head of the Madhyavarti Maharashtra Ekikaran Samiti based in Belgaum, passed away on Tuesday at the age of 84. He had been suffering from age-related ailments for an extended period, leading to his demise. Dalvi was a central figure in the long-standing movement advocating for the inclusion of Marathi-speaking border areas of Karnataka into Maharashtra, dedicating over four decades to this cause.
Decades of Advocacy for Marathi-Speaking Communities
Following the linguistic reorganization of states, numerous Marathi-dominated villages, towns, and cities were incorporated into Karnataka. Dalvi consistently raised this issue with Maharashtra political leaders, emphasizing the cultural and linguistic ties of these regions. The matter remains under active consideration in the Supreme Court, highlighting its ongoing legal and political significance.
Steadfast Leadership Amid Challenges
Shubham Shelke, leader of the youth wing of the forum, confirmed Dalvi's passing. He noted that the veteran leader continued to spearhead the movement despite facing several attacks and alleged excesses by Karnataka authorities. Shelke praised Dalvi's unwavering commitment, stating that fulfilling his dream of securing justice for the Marathi-speaking population would be the most meaningful tribute to his legacy.
Legacy and Final Rites
Dalvi was cremated at the Shahapur crematorium in Belgaum, with numerous forum workers in attendance to pay their respects. His death marks the end of an era for the movement, but his efforts have left a lasting impact on the discourse surrounding state borders and linguistic rights in India.
