A mass bride-and-groom introduction ceremony organized in Madhya Pradesh's Damoh district turned chaotic on Sunday after participants from the groom's side alleged they were not introduced to any prospective brides despite paying a registration fee. The event, intended to facilitate matrimonial connections, quickly escalated into a protest, disrupting local traffic and prompting police intervention.
Highway Blockade and Traffic Disruption
Angry attendees blocked the Damoh–Jabalpur highway around 3 pm, causing a severe traffic jam that lasted for nearly 45 minutes. The situation was only resolved after Kotwali police intervened and cleared the road, restoring normal traffic flow. The protest highlighted the frustration among participants who felt cheated by the event's organizers.
Event Details and Registration Numbers
The event was organized by Radhika Foundation Seva Samiti at a marriage garden near Jabalpur Naka. According to reports, it registered 529 young men and women, with nearly 5000 people attending from Damoh and nearby areas, including Sagar, Jabera, and Tendukheda. Male participants paid a registration fee of Rs 1100 each, expecting to meet potential brides in a structured setting.
Allegations of Mismanagement and Demands for Refunds
Several attendees claimed they were denied the opportunity to meet prospective brides, leading to an uproar and demands for refunds. Police officials stated that the protest erupted after the organizers allegedly failed to provide the arrangements promised to participants, such as proper introductions and meeting opportunities.
Organizer's Response and Police Inquiry
Organizer Reena Khatik addressed the media, explaining that the programme was only meant as an introduction platform and that overcrowding made it impossible to introduce everyone. However, this explanation did little to appease the angry crowd. In response, police have initiated an inquiry, which is expected to be completed within three days. They have assured that registration fees will be refunded if any irregularities are confirmed during the investigation.
