Kolkata/Contai: A wave of mass resignations is causing civic bodies to collapse across West Bengal, including in strongholds of the Trinamool Congress (TMC), exposing growing organisational strain within the party. On Monday, the North Barrackpore municipality was pushed to the brink after 16 councillors tendered their resignations. The churn has also intensified in Bhatpara, Kanchrapara, Halisahar, and Garulia. Most resigning councillors described their move as a 'matter of moral responsibility.'
Resignations in Diamond Harbour and Contai
In Abhishek Banerjee's stronghold of Diamond Harbour, eight TMC councillors resigned. Earlier, the Contai municipality board was dissolved after 14 TMC councillors resigned. These developments indicate a deepening crisis within the party's local governance structures.
Mamata Banerjee's Appeal for Unity
Meanwhile, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Monday urged party councillors to stay united as resignations unsettled several civic bodies run by the party. The TMC leadership is now facing the challenge of restoring stability in these municipalities. The resignations have raised questions about internal dissent and the effectiveness of party discipline.
Further resignations are feared in other municipalities as the discontent appears to be spreading. The situation underscores the growing organisational strain within the TMC, which has dominated Bengal's political landscape for over a decade.
