Massive Security Deployment for Bengal's Second Phase Polling on April 29

The Election Commission of India has unveiled an extensive and meticulously planned security framework for the second phase of assembly elections in West Bengal, scheduled for April 29. This comprehensive strategy covers all 142 constituencies going to the polls, with a focus on ensuring a free, fair, and peaceful voting process through robust personnel deployment.

Central Forces Lead the Security Charge

Official sources confirm that a staggering 2,32,100 personnel from various Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) will be stationed across multiple districts. The Kolkata Police area tops the list with the highest deployment of 27,300 CAPF personnel, underscoring the strategic importance of the state capital.

Following closely are East Burdwan with 26,000 personnel and Hooghly (Rural) with 23,400. Other key regions receiving significant central force allocations include Barrackpore (16,000), Baruipur (16,100), Krishnanagar (14,500), and Howrah Rural (14,700).

District-Wise Security Breakdown

The security blueprint extends across numerous police districts with varying force levels based on local requirements and threat assessments. Additional deployments are planned for Diamond Harbour (13,500), Barasat (13,200), Basirhat (12,300), Ranaghat (12,700), Sundarbans (11,300), Howrah Police Commissionerate (11,000), and Bidhannagar Police Commissionerate (5,000).

Notably, Asansol-Durgapur receives the smallest central force contingent with just 1,300 personnel allocated, reflecting its comparatively lower security needs for this phase.

State Police Supplement Central Efforts

In addition to the massive CAPF presence, the state government will deploy 38,297 police personnel across West Bengal to support election security operations. Once again, Kolkata leads with 7,241 state police personnel assigned to the Kolkata Police area.

A detailed directive issued on Tuesday outlines specific security arrangements for each police district, with forces strategically positioned according to localized requirements and vulnerability assessments.

Multi-Layered Security Architecture

The Election Commission's plan incorporates a sophisticated, tiered security approach designed to address every aspect of the polling process. This includes:

  • Booth-level personnel for direct polling station security
  • Sector mobiles for rapid area coverage
  • Quick Response Teams (QRTs) for immediate crisis intervention
  • Striking forces at multiple administrative levels
  • Reserve units for backup support

Special attention has been devoted to securing strong rooms where electronic voting machines are stored, counting centers where votes will be tallied, and candidates participating in the electoral process.

Dynamic Monitoring and Coordination

Throughout the polling period, flying squads and naka checking teams will remain actively operational to monitor and respond to any irregularities or security breaches. Each district will have a designated nodal officer responsible for coordinating force movement, deployment adjustments, and real-time communication between various security agencies.

This unprecedented security mobilization represents one of the most extensive election security operations in recent West Bengal history, reflecting the Election Commission's commitment to maintaining democratic integrity during this crucial electoral phase.
