Minister MB Patil Urges BJP to Accept Veerashaiva Lingayats as Non-Hindu
MB Patil: BJP Must Accept Veerashaiva Lingayats Not Hindu

Minister MB Patil Calls on BJP to Acknowledge Veerashaiva Lingayats as Separate from Hinduism

In a significant political statement, Karnataka Minister for Large and Medium-Scale Industries and Infrastructure Development, MB Patil, has asserted that the Veerashaiva Lingayat community should be recognized as distinct from Hinduism. Speaking to reporters in Davanagere on Sunday, Patil emphasized that BJP state president BY Vijayendra and former chief minister BS Yediyurappa must accept this position, given their presence at a recent mega convention where the Akhil Bharath Veerashaiva Mahasabha, led by Shamanur Shivashankarappa, declared Veerashaiva Lingayats as non-Hindu in the presence of the Pancha Peetadishwaras.

Negotiations Between Veerashaiva and Lingayat Groups

Patil revealed that the Akhil Bharath Veerashaiva Mahasabha and the Jagatika Lingayat Mahasabha are currently engaged in negotiations to resolve the longstanding issue of an independent religion status. However, he clarified that he has not provided any official clarification on the Jagatika Lingayat Mahasabha's movement for an independent religion. He noted that while the two organizations are working towards a resolution, he does not agree that the Jagatika Lingayat Mahasabha is accepted as Veerashaiva or that Veerashaivas and Lingayats are identical.

Criticism of BJP's Historical and Current Roles

Expanding his critique, Patil contrasted the contributions of Congress and BJP in Indian history. He claimed that Congress played a pivotal role in fighting for the country's independence, whereas BJP leaders acted as agents of the British during the pre-Independence era, with no significant involvement in the freedom movement. He praised Congress for its efforts in securing Independence and initiating numerous public welfare programs.

In contrast, Patil accused the BJP-led central government, under Prime Minister Narendra Modi, of pursuing anti-people policies over the past 11 years. He cited examples such as demonetization, price rise, and inflation, arguing that these measures have harmed the public. Specifically, he pointed out that the NDA government failed to reduce fuel prices even when global crude oil prices declined, highlighting what he views as economic mismanagement.

Davanagere's Development and Political Implications

Turning to local politics, Patil highlighted Davanagere district's reputation for infrastructure and development, attributing this progress to the leadership of Shamanur Shivashankarappa. He expressed confidence that this legacy would bolster the chances of Congress candidate Samarth Shamanur in upcoming elections, suggesting that the district's developmental achievements under Congress influence will resonate with voters.

Patil's remarks underscore the ongoing religious and political tensions in Karnataka, with implications for community identity and electoral dynamics. His call for BJP leaders to acknowledge the non-Hindu status of Veerashaiva Lingayats adds a new dimension to the debate, while his criticisms of BJP policies reflect broader political rivalries in the state and nation.
