Meghalaya Sustains 10% Growth for Three Consecutive Years Post-Pandemic
In a significant announcement during the budget session of the State Assembly in Shillong, Governor CH Vijayashankar revealed that Meghalaya is the only state in India to maintain an average growth rate of 10% for three consecutive years following the Covid-19 pandemic. This milestone underscores the state's robust economic recovery and resilience.
Economic Expansion and Vision for the Future
Governor Vijayashankar highlighted that Meghalaya's economy has nearly doubled in just seven years, soaring from Rs 29,508 crore to an impressive Rs 59,626 crore in 2025. He attributed this growth to the resilience and potential of the people of Meghalaya. Furthermore, the state recorded a real GDP growth of 9.66% in 2024-25, positioning it as the second fastest-growing state in India, trailing only behind Tamil Nadu.
The government has set an ambitious vision to transform Meghalaya into a magnificent state with enhanced service delivery, sustainable infrastructure, and opportunities for all citizens. To realize this long-term goal, the state has developed the Meghalaya Excellence Framework. This strategic roadmap aims to place Meghalaya among India's top 10 states in per capita income and Sustainable Development Goals by 2032.
Key Sectors and Targeted Interventions
To drive economic growth, the government is focusing on strengthening critical sectors such as agriculture, roads, power, water supply, investment promotion, IT and communications, and tourism. These areas are identified as catalysts for sustained development. Additionally, targeted interventions in healthcare, education, livelihood generation, social security, and citizen-centric governance are being implemented to ensure holistic wellbeing for all residents.
The state remains committed to attracting private investment through the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model to fuel growth and create employment opportunities. Governor Vijayashankar noted that state initiatives have already catalyzed over Rs 1,800 crore in private investment. The government has set a goal to mobilize more than Rs 8,000 crore by 2032 and generate over 50,000 direct and indirect jobs.
Infrastructure and Environmental Initiatives
Meghalaya is leveraging support from the Ministry of Development of the North-Eastern Region through various schemes to accelerate core infrastructure projects. These efforts are focused on enhancing tourism, improving water supply, and boosting connectivity across the state.
In a notable achievement, the Centre has commended Meghalaya's community-driven development model for climate resilience and environmental safeguarding in the Economic Survey 2025-26. The state has mapped over 55,000 springs and implemented more than 500 community-led water interventions across 8,430 hectares. These initiatives aim to enhance long-term ecological stability and ensure sustainable resource management.
Governor Vijayashankar's address emphasized the state's proactive approach to economic and social development, highlighting Meghalaya's journey towards becoming a model of growth and sustainability in Northeast India.
