In a shocking incident in Karnataka's Haveri district, miscreants allegedly dug up a temple site in search of hidden treasure, prompting police to register a case against two individuals. The incident came to light on Tuesday when local residents noticed fresh excavation at the ancient temple premises and alerted the authorities.
Details of the Incident
According to police sources, the accused entered the temple complex late at night and used heavy tools to dig a deep pit near the sanctum sanctorum. The motive appears to be the belief that a treasure was buried beneath the temple floor. The vandals fled the scene after being spotted by a vigilant local, but left behind digging equipment.
Police Action
The Haveri police have registered a case under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code, including trespassing, theft, and damage to religious property. A manhunt has been launched to apprehend the suspects, whose identities have been partially established through CCTV footage from nearby establishments.
“We have identified two individuals and are conducting raids to arrest them. The temple is a protected heritage site, and such acts will not be tolerated,” said a senior police officer.
Heritage Concerns
The incident has raised alarm among historians and local residents who fear that such illegal excavations could damage invaluable archaeological evidence. The temple, believed to be centuries old, is listed with the state archaeology department. Officials are assessing the structural damage and have cordoned off the area.
Local community leaders have demanded stricter security measures for heritage sites in the region. “This is not an isolated case. Many old temples in Karnataka have faced similar threats. The government must step up surveillance,” said a resident.
Legal Provisions
Under the Karnataka Ancient and Historical Monuments and Archaeological Sites and Remains Act, any unauthorized digging near protected monuments is punishable with imprisonment and fines. The police have added these charges to the FIR.
The investigation is ongoing, and authorities are urging anyone with information about the suspects to come forward.
