Mizoram Launches Monitoring Cells to Safeguard LPG Supply Amid Global Unrest

In a proactive move to address concerns over potential cooking gas shortages, the Mizoram government has officially constituted state-level and district-level monitoring cells. These cells are specifically designed to prevent hoarding and black marketing of LPG, ensuring an uninterrupted supply to bona fide consumers. This decision comes amid growing fears of disruptions in international energy supply chains, largely attributed to the ongoing war in West Asia, which has heightened anxieties about fuel availability across regions.

Government Initiatives to Maintain Fuel Stability

According to an official statement released on Wednesday, the monitoring cells were established on Tuesday as part of a broader strategy to guard against panic buying and misinformation. The Mizoram government is working in tandem with central efforts to ensure that people across the country do not face shortages of petroleum, oil, and lubricants (POL) and LPG, given the current geopolitical situation. The state is also focused on maintaining the availability of essential commodities, with a particular emphasis on fuel resources to support daily needs.

Key responsibilities of these monitoring cells include:

  • Preventing hoarding and black marketing of LPG cylinders.
  • Ensuring uninterrupted supply of essential commodities to consumers.
  • Curbing the spread of misinformation that could lead to panic buying.
  • Monitoring local distributors to verify timely and adequate supply chains.

Current Supply Status and Daily Requirements

The state's daily requirement for LPG is approximately 7,900 cylinders, as highlighted in the statement. Local distributors have been receiving supplies without undue delay or difficulty, with LPG being lifted efficiently from the IOCL bottling plant at Borkhola in Assam. This seamless operation is crucial to meeting the demand in Mizoram, ensuring that households have access to cooking gas without interruption.

The government has made a public appeal, urging residents not to indulge in panic buying, hoarding, or black marketing. It also encourages households to use fuel prudently to help maintain stability in the supply chain.

Concerns Over Fuel Exports to Myanmar

Meanwhile, a significant concern has emerged regarding the unregulated large-scale export of fuel, particularly petrol and diesel, to Myanmar's southern Chin state. This export occurs through border points such as Zochachhuah and Hruitezawl in Lawngtlai district, as well as Lungpuk in neighbouring Siaha district, all located along the Myanmar border. Residents have reported that unchecked fuel exports from southern Mizoram are draining the state's oil supply, with unscrupulous traders allegedly selling at higher rates to the Arakan Army (AA), an insurgent group active in Rakhine state and southern Chin state.

This situation adds complexity to the state's efforts to manage fuel resources, as it not only addresses internal supply issues but also contends with cross-border trade dynamics that could exacerbate shortages. The monitoring cells are expected to play a vital role in addressing these challenges by overseeing distribution and preventing illegal activities that could undermine fuel availability for local consumers.
