Congress MLA Urges Immediate Action for Punjab Farmers After Crop Damage
In Chandigarh, Congress MLA Balwinder Singh Dhaliwal, representing the Phagwara assembly constituency, has voiced serious concerns regarding the extensive damage inflicted upon standing wheat crops in Punjab. This destruction is attributed to recent unseasonal rainfall and severe hailstorms that struck during the critical wheat harvesting period. On Sunday, Dhaliwal made an urgent appeal to the state government, demanding the immediate initiation of a comprehensive crop damage assessment, commonly referred to as girdawari, to evaluate the losses accurately.
Double Blow to Farmers Amid Ongoing Financial Struggles
Dhaliwal emphasized that farmers in the region are facing a devastating double whammy. He stated, "Farmers were yet to recover from last year's floods, and recent rainfall and hailstorms, during the wheat harvesting season, have dealt another blow to them. This double whammy has pushed farmers into a situation of serious financial instability." The MLA highlighted that the agricultural community is already grappling with an economic crisis, and these additional losses have exacerbated their hardships significantly.
Delayed Compensation Worsens Farmer Distress
Adding to the urgency, Dhaliwal pointed out that compensation for damage caused to paddy crops during previous floods remains unpaid. He remarked, "Compensation for the damage caused to paddy crops during the previous floods has still not been provided, worsening the financial hardships of farmers." This delay in relief measures has left farmers in a state of increased misery, struggling to sustain their livelihoods amid mounting debts and uncertainty.
Specific Demands for Government Intervention
In response to the crisis, MLA Dhaliwal has put forth clear demands for immediate government intervention. He urged the authorities to:
- Conduct a swift and thorough crop damage assessment (girdawari) without delay.
- Announce a compensation package of Rs 50,000 per acre for the affected farmers.
- Ensure that relief funds are disbursed promptly and reach the intended beneficiaries without bureaucratic hurdles.
Dhaliwal stressed that timely action is crucial to prevent further financial instability and support the farming community during this challenging period. The call for intervention underscores the pressing need for robust agricultural policies and effective disaster management in Punjab to safeguard farmer interests and food security.
