MNS Secures Representation in Key Kalyan-Dombivli Civic Committees
In a significant political development, the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) has been granted representation across all three pivotal civic panels within the Kalyan-Dombivli Municipal Corporation (KDMC). This move follows the party's decision to extend support to the Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena, solidifying its role in the ruling alliance. The appointments were formally approved during the inaugural general body meeting of the newly elected KDMC, marking a strategic consolidation of power.
Committee Allocations and Political Dynamics
As part of the ruling Shiv Sena-led coalition, the MNS has been accommodated in the standing committee, the women and child welfare committee, and the education committee. Concurrently, the Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray) faction has managed to secure one seat in each of these committees, highlighting the nuanced power-sharing arrangements at play. This committee formation directly mirrors the political equations that emerged after the recent KDMC elections, where the Shiv Sena and BJP contested separately but later united to form the ruling alliance.
In the polls, the Shiv Sena clinched 53 seats out of the total 122, while the BJP secured 50 seats. Political observers note that prior to formally integrating the BJP into the ruling setup, the Shiv Sena had already garnered support from five MNS corporators along with several independents. This preemptive maneuver effectively diminished the BJP's bargaining leverage within the alliance, reshaping the political landscape of the corporation.
Tensions and Security Concerns at the Meeting
The general body meeting commenced under tense circumstances when police conducted a security check at the KDMC headquarters just minutes before the session began. Several corporators voiced strong objections to this action, questioning the administration over the necessity of such searches within the civic headquarters. "We are elected representatives, not thieves or robbers. Why are we being subjected to such checks?" some corporators demanded, seeking a clear explanation from officials. They further challenged the purpose of deploying municipal security guards if police interventions were deemed necessary.
Civic officials later provided clarifications, assuring that proper precautions would be implemented in the future to avoid similar disruptions. Following this brief but contentious episode, the house proceeded to appoint members to the three key committees, refocusing on the agenda at hand.
Development Initiatives and Political Expulsions
During the meeting, the civic body also passed a resolution congratulating Kalyan MP Shrikant Shinde for securing a substantial sanction of Rs 4,800 crore from the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA). These funds are earmarked for various development projects in the Kalyan-Dombivli region, promising significant infrastructural advancements.
Amid these developments, the Shiv Sena (UBT) faction took disciplinary action by expelling KDMC corporator Madhur Mhatre from the party. This decision was announced through the party's mouthpiece, Saamana, and comes in the wake of political maneuvering involving the 11 corporators elected from Shiv Sena (UBT) in the KDMC. Notably, four of these corporators had gone missing for several days, with three subsequently reaffirming their allegiance to Uddhav Thackeray's party by officially registering at Konkan Bhavan.
However, Madhur Mhatre has not rejoined the party group, prompting the expulsion. Sena (UBT) Kalyan district president Sharad Patil stated, "The party today expelled Mhatre officially for his anti-party activities, and in the coming days, we will initiate the process of his disqualification, which will result in a fresh election in the concerned ward." This move underscores the ongoing internal strife and realignments within the political factions operating in the region.
