China Secures Top Spot at 2026 Winter Paralympics in Italy

The 2026 Winter Paralympics, held in the Italian cities of Milan and Cortina d’Ampezzo from March 6 to March 15, concluded with China emerging as the dominant force in the medal standings. This prestigious event, organized by the International Paralympic Committee, marked the 59th edition of the Winter Paralympic Games and showcased the incredible talents of para-athletes from around the globe.

Record Participation and Medal Events

A total of 611 athletes representing 55 countries competed in the Games, which featured 79 medal events across six para sports: para alpine skiing, para biathlon, para cross-country skiing, para snowboard, para ice hockey, and wheelchair curling. Notably, this edition welcomed several nations making their Winter Paralympics debut, including El Salvador, Haiti, Montenegro, North Macedonia, and Portugal, highlighting the expanding global reach of winter para sports.

China's Impressive Medal Haul

China delivered a strong and consistent performance throughout the competition, finishing at the top of the medal table with a total of 44 medals. This impressive tally comprised 15 gold, 13 silver, and 16 bronze medals, underscoring China's growing prowess and investment in winter para sports. The nation's athletes excelled across multiple disciplines, contributing to their leading position.

Other Notable Performances

The United States secured second place in the medal standings, with one of the standout moments coming in para ice hockey. The American team defeated Canada 6-2 in the final, clinching their fifth consecutive gold medal in the sport. Russia returned to the Winter Paralympics under its national flag for the first time since 2014, finishing third overall with eight gold medals and numerous podium finishes.

Host nation Italy also made history by achieving its best-ever performance in Winter Paralympic history, finishing fourth in the medal table with 16 medals. This success delighted home fans and demonstrated Italy's commitment to para sports development.

Closing Ceremony and Future Games

The closing ceremony took place at the historic Cortina Curling Olympic Stadium, a venue that also hosted events during the 1956 Winter Olympics.
