Former BJP MLA Mohan Lal Returns to Shiromani Akali Dal Ahead of Key Amit Shah Rally

In a significant political development in Punjab, two-time former MLA Mohan Lal has switched allegiance from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD). This move comes just two days before Union Home Minister Amit Shah is scheduled to address a major BJP rally in Moga.

Political Switch in Presence of SAD Leadership

The defection took place on Thursday during a rally in Bagha Purana, where Mohan Lal formally joined the Shiromani Akali Dal in the presence of party president Sukhbir Singh Badal. This timing is particularly noteworthy as it occurs on the eve of a high-profile BJP event featuring one of the party's most senior leaders.

Mohan Lal comes from a prominent political family in Punjab. He is the son of the late Chaudhary Swarna Ram, who served as a minister in the SAD-BJP coalition governments of 1997–2002 and 2007–2012. Swarna Ram was among the BJP's first Scheduled Caste leaders in Punjab and played a significant role in the state's political landscape.

A Political Career Marked by Frequent Shifts

Mohan Lal's political journey has been characterized by multiple party changes over the years:

  • He initially served as an SAD MLA representing Banga during the coalition governments when his father was a minister
  • In 2002, after being denied a ticket by SAD, he contested under the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) banner
  • He returned to SAD before joining the BJP in 2016 during a state-level SC Morcha rally in Jalandhar
  • Lal rejoined BSP in April 2018, then moved to Congress in April 2019
  • He returned to BJP in late 2021 before his latest switch back to SAD

Recent Political Maneuvering and Seat Aspirations

Despite contesting as a BJP candidate from Banga in the 2022 elections, sources indicate that Mohan Lal had been seeking better prospects in the Phagwara constituency. However, this aspiration faced significant challenges as heavyweights and former ministers of state Som Parkash and Vijay Sampla both vied for that same seat, effectively crowding out other contenders.

This political move represents another chapter in Lal's complex relationship with Punjab's major political parties. His attempt to replace Som Parkash in Phagwara carries particular significance, as Parkash had previously displaced Lal's father from political prominence in 2012.

The timing of this defection, just ahead of Amit Shah's rally, adds an extra layer of political drama to Punjab's evolving political landscape. It highlights the ongoing realignments and strategic calculations that characterize state politics as parties position themselves for future electoral contests.
