Congress Leader Jitu Patwari Threatens Hunger Strike Over Wheat Procurement Crisis in MP
In a dramatic escalation of political tensions, Madhya Pradesh Congress president Jitu Patwari has penned a strongly-worded letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, highlighting what he describes as a severe crisis in the state's wheat procurement system. The letter, dispatched on Wednesday, alleges gross unpreparedness by the state government, particularly focusing on a critical shortage of gunny bags needed to store the agricultural produce.
Allegations of Mismanagement and Farmer Distress
Patwari's communication paints a grim picture of the ground reality, contradicting official claims of preparedness. The state government had previously announced ambitious targets to procure lakhs of metric tonnes of wheat, setting the stage for a smooth acquisition process. However, according to the Congress leader, this facade of readiness masks a troubling deficiency.
"Farmers are sitting in the markets with their produce under the open sky, lamenting the mismanagement of the administrative system," the letter states, emphasizing the immediate plight of agricultural workers. This situation is exacerbated by the state's inability to provide adequate storage materials, forcing farmers to expose their harvest to potential damage.
Procurement Delays and Political Infighting
The procurement timeline itself has become a point of contention. Initially scheduled to commence on April 1, the acquisition dates were subsequently postponed to April 10 and April 15 across various districts, creating uncertainty and logistical challenges for farmers. Patwari links these administrative failures to deeper political rivalries within the ruling establishment.
He alleges that the people of Madhya Pradesh have recognized that farmers are becoming collateral damage in the power struggle between Chief Minister Mohan Yadav and Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan. "Because of this infighting, the state government is unable to exert any pressure on the Centre to protect farmers' rights," Patwari asserts, suggesting that internal discord is paralyzing effective governance.
Historical Context and Broken Promises
The Congress president contextualizes the current crisis within a pattern of perceived betrayals. He recalls that during the last assembly elections, the ruling party made a populist promise to purchase wheat from farmers at a rate of Rs 2,700 per quintal. "As soon as it came to power, farmers were betrayed and the promise forgotten," the letter alleges, framing the present gunny bag shortage as another chapter in this narrative of deception.
"First, we were cheated in the name of the support price, and now the government doesn't have gunny bags to purchase the produce at a lower price. This situation is shameful and will test farmers' patience," Patwari writes, expressing his party's refusal to remain a mute spectator to what he terms the humiliation of farmers.
Ultimatum and Call for Central Intervention
In a bold ultimatum, Patwari has threatened to personally undertake a hunger protest in front of Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan's official residence in Bhopal if the gunny bag shortage is not addressed promptly. He urges Prime Minister Modi to intervene and coordinate between the central and state governments to ensure adequate supplies.
The letter poignantly notes the irony of the situation, given that Chouhan, the current Union Agriculture Minister, previously served as the Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh. "It is unfortunate that farmers in the Union agriculture minister's home state are yearning for gunny bags," Patwari remarks, highlighting the perceived disconnect between past governance and present responsibilities.
Patwari concludes with a firm warning: "Otherwise, I will personally fast in front of Shivraj Singh Chouhan's Bhopal residence," signaling his readiness to escalate the protest if immediate corrective measures are not implemented. This development underscores the growing tensions surrounding agricultural policies and their implementation in Madhya Pradesh.
