Stormy Winter Session Looms for Madhya Pradesh Assembly
The winter session of the Madhya Pradesh assembly, commencing on Monday, is anticipated to witness intense confrontations as the Opposition Congress prepares to challenge the state government on numerous critical issues affecting the public.
Congress legislators have identified several pressing matters that demand immediate government attention and accountability. These include deteriorating law and order conditions, particularly the alarming cases of minor girls being raped across the state. The party also plans to highlight irregularities in the special revision of electoral rolls and the tragic deaths of Booth Level Officers during this process.
Key Issues Dominating the Assembly Agenda
The Congress legislative party has compiled a comprehensive list of concerns that will dominate the session's debates. Apart from law and order and electoral roll issues, the opposition will focus on atrocities against Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes, and the heartbreaking deaths of 14 children in Chhindwara district who consumed contaminated cough syrup.
Other significant matters include the forced installation of smart electricity meters, the government's failure to procure maize and soybean at minimum support prices, ongoing fertilizer shortages, unfulfilled employment promises, and delays in increasing OBC reservations from 14% to 27% as previously committed.
Congress Strategy and Government Evasion Concerns
During a crucial meeting of the Congress Legislative Party held at the official residence of Leader of Opposition Umang Singhar, party MLAs meticulously discussed their strategy to effectively raise these public interest issues on the assembly floor.
Singhar expressed strong criticism against the BJP government, accusing them of deliberately shortening assembly sessions to avoid debates on matters of public importance. Despite having only four days at their disposal during this winter session, Congress legislators have vowed to raise all relevant issues with full force and determination.
The Opposition leader emphasized that corruption has reached unprecedented levels under the current regime, while the law and order situation teeters on the verge of collapse. Incidents of atrocities against women, SC/ST communities, and other vulnerable sections of society are steadily increasing, yet the government appears reluctant to face legislative scrutiny on these critical matters.
The meeting saw attendance from state Congress chief Jitu Patwari, signaling the party's unified approach to holding the government accountable during the brief winter session that promises to be both contentious and revealing about the state's governance challenges.
