MSEDCL Launches Aggressive Drive, Disconnects Over 36,000 Power Defaulters in Nagpur District
The Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (MSEDCL) has initiated one of its most forceful recovery campaigns in recent years, disconnecting the electricity connections of more than 36,000 power bill defaulters across the Nagpur district since the beginning of March. This decisive action comes as the power utility grapples with a mounting arrears burden of approximately ₹43 crore, compelling officials to enforce stringent measures to recover outstanding dues.

In a bid to maximize recovery, MSEDCL teams have been directed to act firmly against consumers who have persistently failed to clear their dues. The enforcement measures have included disconnection drives conducted under police protection in various parts of the city and district. Officials emphasized that this approach is necessary to tackle the significant financial strain caused by unpaid bills.
Particularly in sensitive areas such as Mankapur and Nai Basti under the Lashkaribagh subdivision, MSEDCL teams, accompanied by police personnel, carried out extensive operations. They cut electricity supply to hundreds of consumers who had ignored repeated notices to settle their outstanding amounts. This crackdown reflects the utility's commitment to addressing the arrears issue head-on.
Resistance and Legal Action Amid Recovery Efforts
The aggressive recovery drive has not been without challenges. In a locality within Katol town, an MSEDCL team was allegedly attacked while performing recovery duties. In response, police have registered a case against those involved, with officials issuing stern warnings about strict action against anyone obstructing government work. This incident underscores the tensions that can arise during such large-scale enforcement operations.
Government Bodies Face Ultimatum Over Pending Dues
The recovery efforts extend beyond individual consumers to include government bodies as well. MSEDCL has identified pending dues of nearly ₹10 crore from water supply schemes in the district, prompting the utility to issue an ultimatum to local self-government institutions. These include Nagar Panchayats, municipal councils, and Block Development Officers.
Officials have cautioned that failure to clear these dues could result in the disconnection of electricity supply to essential services, such as water supply and street lighting.
