Mumbai Faces Waterlogging as Pipeline Bursts During Bridge Work
A major water pipeline burst at Elphinstone Bridge in Mumbai on Sunday evening, leading to significant waterlogging and supply disruptions in the surrounding area. The incident occurred around 6:30 PM during ongoing piling work, causing chaos during peak water supply hours.
Sudden Flooding and Resident Inconvenience
The 150 mm diameter pipeline ruptured abruptly, flooding the road within minutes. Local residents reported severe difficulties in navigating the stretch, with one stating, "It all happened very suddenly. The road was flooded within minutes, and it became difficult to even walk through the stretch." This disruption affected the scheduled water supply, which typically runs daily from 4 PM to 7 PM in the locality.
Civic Response and Repair Efforts
Civic officials confirmed that the damage occurred during foundation work for the bridge, which disrupted the water supply and flooded parts of the area. The BMC's hydraulic engineer's department immediately dispatched teams to the site to initiate urgent repair work. Officials have assured that the pipeline repairs are being prioritized and are expected to be completed before the next water supply cycle. Fortunately, no injuries were reported in the incident.
Impact on Daily Life and Commuters
The burst pipeline not only caused waterlogging but also led to water disruption, inconveniencing both residents and commuters. The area, already busy during evening hours, faced additional challenges due to the flooding. Authorities are working to restore normalcy swiftly, emphasizing the importance of infrastructure safety during construction projects.
