Violence Erupts in Nagaland Village Over Land Dispute, Houses and Shops Torched
Violence broke out in Maova village, located under the Medziphema subdivision of Nagaland's Chumoukedima district, on Friday morning. The incident stemmed from a land dispute between members of the Kuki and Angami communities, leading to significant property damage and unrest in the area.
Extensive Property Damage Reported
According to the Maova village council, the violence resulted in the damage of three private houses. Additionally, 17 roadside shops, a community hall, a guest house, and an office of the council were set ablaze. Multiple vehicles, including two-wheelers, were also damaged during the clashes. The Dimapur police commissioner's office described the incident as "sudden and unfortunate", noting involvement from the Chakroma Public Organisation and Maova village.
Authorities Respond and Urge Calm
Authorities have stated that the situation is now under control, with security forces deployed to the area and normal traffic movement restored. In an official statement, the government urged the public to maintain peace and refrain from taking the law into their own hands. Nagaland Deputy Chief Minister Yanthungo Patton expressed deep concern on social media platform X, writing, "Deeply concerned by the recent incidents of violence and arson reported in Maova village. Any act that disrupts peace and endangers lives and property is a matter of serious concern. I urge all those involved to remain calm, exercise restraint, and allow lawful and constructive processes to address grievances."
The incident highlights ongoing tensions in the region, with authorities emphasizing the importance of peaceful resolution through legal channels to prevent further escalation.
