Nagpur Mourns the Loss of Veteran Politician and Educationist Datta Meghe
Hundreds of political leaders, cutting across party lines, along with party workers and citizens, gathered in Nagpur on Monday to pay their last respects to former Member of Parliament, veteran politician, and esteemed educationist, Datta Meghe. Meghe passed away on Sunday at the age of 89, marking the end of a distinguished public life that spanned over five decades and leaving a profound void in the public and institutional landscape of Vidarbha.
Somber Atmosphere as Mourners Queue for Final Glimpse
A large crowd began assembling early in the morning at Meghe's residence in Atrey Layout. Grief replaced gratitude as mourners stood in long queues, waiting patiently for a final glimpse of their beloved leader. The atmosphere remained deeply somber, with supporters and employees from several educational institutions founded by Meghe visibly emotional while paying their homage.
Wide Political Influence Reflected in Attendees
The presence of numerous leaders underscored Meghe's extensive influence and enduring public connection, both in state and national politics. Among those who visited his residence to pay their respects were:
- Maharashtra Congress president Harshwardhan Sapkal
- Vanchit Bahujan Aghadi chief Prakash Ambedkar
- Former minister Satish Chaturvedi
- Former MP Vilas Muttemwar
Additionally, several legislators, former ministers, people's representatives, and senior administrative and police officials also attended, highlighting the broad respect he commanded across various spheres.

Known for his principle of "never refusing help to anyone", Datta Meghe built a vast support base that extended across political, educational, and social domains. Throughout the day, people from Nagpur and surrounding districts arrived in large numbers. This included individuals who had worked with him in public life or were associated with the numerous institutions he established, all coming to honor his memory.
Final Journey with State Honors
The mortal remains were kept for public viewing until early afternoon. Subsequently, they were transported to his village in Sawangi (Meghe) in Wardha district. There, the last rites were performed with full state honors in the evening, a fitting tribute to his lifelong service.
Upcoming Visits and End of an Era
Nationalist Congress Party founder Sharad Pawar is scheduled to visit Nagpur on March 24 to meet with Meghe's grieving family. He will be accompanied by former home minister Anil Deshmukh. Both leaders are expected to arrive by a special flight, proceed directly to the residence to offer condolences, and return to Mumbai later the same day.
Meghe's passing truly marks the end of an era in Vidarbha. He was widely regarded as a leader who seamlessly connected politics with grassroots development, making significant contributions particularly in the fields of education, healthcare, and social welfare. His absence leaves a legacy that will be remembered and cherished by many for years to come.
