Nashik's Major Kumbh Infrastructure Initiative Faces Setback
The Nashik Municipal Corporation's ambitious plan to complete 28 major road projects, with a collective value of Rs 1,270 crore, in preparation for the upcoming Simhastha Kumbh Mela is now facing significant delays. Originally scheduled for completion by March 2027, these critical infrastructure works are now unlikely to meet that deadline due to sluggish progress on utility-related tasks.
Revised Timeline Pushes Completion to May 2027
Officials have confirmed that the expected completion timeline has been extended by nearly two months, with the new target now set for the end of May 2027. This delay stems primarily from behind-schedule construction of underground utility ducts, which must be completed before road building can commence.
"This lag will almost certainly defer the overall road development to at least May next year," admitted a municipal official involved in the project. The public works department has formally sought approval from municipal commissioner Manisha Khatri for this two-month extension, proposing May 31, 2027, as the revised completion date.
Integrated Utility Duct Network Causes Bottleneck
As part of its long-term infrastructure strategy, NMC is installing an integrated utility duct network designed to prevent future road digging. These comprehensive ducts will house:
- Water pipelines
- Drainage networks
- Optical fibre cables (OFC)
- Piped natural gas infrastructure
- Stormwater drains
The initial deadline for finishing this ducting work was originally set for February-end 2027, but has been extended multiple times—first to March 15 and then further to March 31. These repeated postponements have created a domino effect that now threatens the entire road project timeline.
White-Topping Technology for Heavy Traffic
Nearly half of the proposed roads are slated to be built using white-topping technology, specifically designed to withstand the heavy traffic expected during the Kumbh Mela. However, "These utility works are already delayed, and we cannot start actual road construction until they are completed," explained a senior NMC official associated with the project.
Despite work orders for all 28 major Kumbh roads having already been issued, ground-level construction remains effectively stalled due to the pending utility duct completion.
Kumbh Mela Timeline Adds Pressure
The Simhastha Kumbh Mela will officially begin with the ceremonial flag-hoisting on October 31, 2026, followed by three amrit snans (holy baths) between August and September 2027. With just 15 months remaining until the flag-hoisting ceremony, the civic body has fast-tracked several infrastructure initiatives, yet the delays in road development continue to represent a major concern for event preparations.
The municipal corporation faces increasing pressure to expedite these critical infrastructure projects to ensure Nashik is adequately prepared for the massive influx of pilgrims expected during the religious gathering.
